JJA says he's sticking to canon, so...

Well it coudn't be based purely in the academy, that concepts been shot down many times before for a TV series with derisory "Star Trek 90210" comments

Even if you do'nt count TAS as cannon, theres still the Pike issue.

What Pike issue? Bruce Greenwood is playing Captain Pike, so they haven't forgotten about him. Since this movie takes place in different time frames, we'll probably get to see Kirk take command of the Enterprise at the end of the movie, but that's just my hunch. A portion of the movie will have the Enterprise under the command of Christopher Pike just like canon states.

Unless the movie states somewhere that Pike was the FIRST person to command that particular starship Enterprise, that doesn't rule out April either. It'll just mean April's brief command wasn't pertinent enough to the plot of the movie to mention or show.

...would it be too much to ask him to tell us what episodes are worth watching just before going to see STXI? Since many of us have TOS on DVD or VHS, wouldn't be more fun and interesting to watch them just before heading out to see the movie?

I suspect JJ might tell you to see the movie, find out for yourself what TOS episodes are most relevant to the plot, watch those episodes on DVD or VHS, and then go see the movie a second time. ;)

If the movie has Chekov in it which I've read that it does, the some of it will take place after the the first season.

Not necessarily. Just because Chekov wasn't on the bridge the first season doesn't mean he wasn't on the ship. In fact "The Deadly Years" and TWOK suggest otherwise. ;)

Since many of us have TOS on DVD or VHS, wouldn't be more fun and interesting to watch them just before heading out to see the movie? By mentioning a handful of episodes or movies, he wouldn't be giving away too much because The general audience who gets drawn in won't do this obviously, but the die hard fans (that's us!) would get a big kick out of it. It would ensure that we all had the opportunity to pick up on any and all references to TOS.
My understanding is that he's making this film as a direct remake of "Spock's Brain" (hence casting "Heroes'" Sylar... who's not REALLY playing young Spock, he's actually playing a trans-gendered EyeMorg!).

It will also heavily involve elements of "Turnabout Intruder" and the villain, to be played by Eric Bana, is Dr. Sevrin from "The Way to Eden" (hence his shaved head).

So, definitely go watch those three episodes...:evil::evil:

I don't carer so much anymore is Star Trek XI will be cannon or not, just if its going to be good or not.

You forgot "And the Children Shall Lead"...I hear Gorgan will be featured in this -- played by Melvin Belli's son, Caeser, who played one of the children in the original.

^ You know I didn't think anything could deter me away from seeing this movie, but the above would!

And don't forget VOY: Threshold as a reminder that if you travel at warp 10 you're all over the place at the same time and totally confused, not to mention destined to turn into some lizard thingy after leaving the theater, leaving a trail of baby lizard thingies that slither away to populate the sewer system.
