Jeri Ryan

I'm guessing it wasn't Jeri Ryan who chose the outfits she wore. And that silver outfit that called special attention to her boobs was only worn in two episodes. Jeri herself has said how much she hated that outfit because it was so uncomfortable like a full body girdle.

Yet, she told the doc that it was acceptable.

I know she didn't choose the outfits. But come on, all of the catsuits called special attention to her boobs

Not as much as that first outfit.

And what should she have done? Worn a binder and flattened them out? Nor did she personally choose any outfit she wore, any more than any other actor on the show chose theirs. The annoyance is misdirected aiming it at her personally.

I never said she chose her outfit. I only said I can understand why anyone would be a little upset about bringing on a character that apears to be nothing but T&A

The outfits were padded. I know...some of you don't care.
Still felt sorry for her...I don't care how well she got paid.

Didn't she burn it when the series ended? Or was that a fan myth?

I've seen her in person, they were definately padded LOL. But I've heard people say that all of the women's costumes had padding in them.

I think she wanted to burn it but they wouldn't let her. I could be wrong though.

I feel a bit sorry too. Plus, she did such a great job with the character to flesh it out and make it a very interesting one but she still faces a lot of resentment because of her looks and what she had to wear.

I'm not surprised. When the men on TNG switched over to the more comfortable uniforms the women had to stick with the original uncomfortable costumes....but then a lot of them...men and women had to wear girdles...and some of the men had to wear muscle shirts.

I do recall reading Jeri had no illusions on why she was cast. So she was aware appereantly of the sex-appeal they wanted to work in. That is, if I remember correctly. Did a quick google search, but couldn't find what I was looking for. Can anyone corroborate this? Am I just misremembering this?

Ha! No!!! NO!!! Who??? Oh, no ... that's bad!

So it's ok for the women to wear exaggerated costumes that might be uncomfortable just so they look good...but not the men? ;)

In answer to your question according to Will Wheaton all the men on TNG wore muscle shirts...including Michale Dorn. I'm not sure about the other shows.

As far as the girdles Wang said that one showed up with his costume and he was strongly encouraged to wear it. McNeil gained weight during the fourth season (he said it was sympathy pounds because his real life wife was pregnant at the time) but he managed to lose it by the next season. He said he wore it at the time and didn't seem embarrassed by the fact. Mulgrew said wearing one was part of her contract.

As far as DS9 goes...I haven't heard but Dorn was on that show so I'm assuming he wore it then as well.

Needs must when the devil drives ...

I had never heard that expression before. Had to look it up.

I have wondered about all that compared to present day TV. It would 'seem' that now the producers are more likely to demand that their actors stay in shape so they wouldn't need to rely on the 'shapewear'. These days any actor could have a random (I'm talking PG rated primetime network TV here) scene where he is supposed to take his shirt off...or she is supposed to be seen in a swimsuit or her night clothes.
