JD's Comic Book Thread

There have been at least 4 reboot/Crises since Sandman ended in 1996ish.

Zero Hour, Final Crisis, Ultimate Crisis and Flash-Point.

But stuff has happened.

Daniel (Dream) showed up in Morrison's JLA, and more recently, but still a long time ago, Death from Sandman "collected" Lex Luthor when he died.

And lets not forget that right NOW that Gaiman is churning out a prequel to Sandman starring Sandman.

Death of the Endless appeared in Captain Atom (vol. 1) #42 and (as mentioned by Guy) in Paul Cornell's run on Action Comics.

Dream of the Endless (as mentioned by Guy) appears in Grant Morrison's JLA.

Lyta Hall who was not Gaiman-created but heavily used and shaped by Gaiman in Sandman is a main character in the Robinson/Goyer/Johns JSA, which leads an almost appearance by Dream. (He's clearly influencing events, but never seen.)

Destiny of the Endless is again not Gaiman-created but used and shaped by him; he played a key role in Mark Waid's run on The Brave and the Bold.

This doesn't count the numerous Vertigo appearances of Gaiman-created characters, nor does it count pre-Sandman appearances of characters Gaiman used.

Yesterday I finally decided to stop putting if off and got the first collection of Neil Gaiman's Sandman. I read the first issue and really enjoyed it.
I never read the whole run but read excerpt arcs over the 90's.
It's funny you posted this cause earlier this week I ordered the Sandman Omnibus vol.1 and it's arriving today based on the tracking number. I hope my memory of it is as fond as I recall!!

Death of the Endless appeared in Captain Atom (vol. 1) #42 and (as mentioned by Guy) in Paul Cornell's run on Action Comics.

The appearance in Captain Atom was never approved by Gaiman and the guy who wrote it apparently lost his job at DC over it. Though he went on to do better things for cartoons including Gargoyles, Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice.

Cool. Thanks for the info people.
Since my last post I read the first Mad Max: Fury Road comic. I posted my thoughts over in the movie's thread.

After Thanos is dealt with in the Marvel movies, I look to see Darkseid in film. I do hope they don't show him running around. Like Hannibal's "entrance" in Silence of the Lambs, he seems much more powerful in his usual pose. His omega beams carrying his dynamism.

I'm wondering if they are going to use Darkseid for the JL movie, he does seem like the obvious choice, but like you said, he could be seen as being to similar to Thanos.

Marvel hasn't done shit with Thanos in the 4 years since he showed up in Avengers 1.

He just sits there on his ezi chair like Archie Bunker growling.

For the first time in my life, I've caught up to the Invincible comic! I've always been two years behind because I love it so much I save it for special occasions to read all at once. I finally read it all! I still love this comic. It's so colorful and chock full of crazy costumed action. While the characters are all thinly veiled Marvel/DC rip offs, Kirkman manages to make them his own and treats the world as realistically as possible. I also love the character evolution Mark goes through which happen in very believable ways. Also, Atom Eve is the hottest character in comics :p

Yeah, I've really come to love Invincible. I started reading it from the start when I went on vacation last fall and now it's at the top of my "to read" list. In fact I am just about to have a coffee and read issue #120!

Edited to add: Just finished and enjoyed the hell out of it. As a Star Trek fan there were some great Easter eggs in this one.

I read the second Sandman issue last week. Still enjoying it. I'm assuming it just gets crazier from here?

^
I'd hesitate to use the term "crazy" for Neil Gaiman's work. Meticulously researched, maybe. Cleverly plotted, possibly. Intricately woven, definitely.

Wait until Morpheus goes to Hell and battles a demon in a few issues. Then, read issue #8. If "The Sound of Her Wings" doesn't make you love the series, give up then.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to The Sound of Her Wings. In the intro Karen Berger says that she thought the series was good, but didn't really become extraordinary until TSoHW. Death is probably one of the characters I've been most curious to see.

I didn't really mean crazy in a bad way.

I'm continuing my read of IDW's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and just finished the huge "City of Fear" arc and just when I didn't think this book could get any better...it DOES! It continues to be outstanding and I just read the issue between Krang and Shredder and loved it. I love everything about this book, this should have served as the source material for the new films.

I read the FCBD offering of TMNT and struggled to get through it. Can't say I'm a fan.

I'm wondering if they are going to use Darkseid for the JL movie, he does seem like the obvious choice, but like you said, he could be seen as being to similar to Thanos.

The visual of him in the animated Justice League War was fantastic. They nailed Darkseid. He didn't fly like everyone else usually does, he stood upright and then floated forward. His voice wasn't just deep, it was machine-like and surreal. I suggest checking it out.

Reading the FCBD preview if you've never read the book before was probably not a good idea as it previews the upcoming final battle against Shredder. A WHOLE ton of plot has happened before this so one would struggle without any context. I'd start at the start of the book. It's so worth it.

I've actually got the first collection of the IDW TMNT on Comixology account. It'll probably be one of the next series I start, along with Hinterkind.
Any of you guys read Hinterkind? I picked up the first issue and few months ago and really enjoyed, so I got first collection after that.
