Japan hit by 9.0 earthquake.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Well I live about ten minutes North of Seattle. We're under a Tsunami warning here now. I'm not sure how bad it's going to be but whatever we get will hit us at about 8:30 my time (so in about 5 hours).

I'll let you all know if anything major happens.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Hoping that all TrekBBS members in Japan are okay and that anyones family or friends there are okay. Heck, I hope as many people as possible over there are okay.

I was just on the phone to my dad. His girlfriend is in Japan and I could hear the worry in his voice. He's not spoken to her yet so he's doesn't know if her and her son are okay. I've got my fingers crossed that they both are.

Hailing from Japan. We're safe here in this corner of the island, but the coastal cities and some of my friends along the border are still in tsunami shelters until they're sure it's over. Was pretty worried about my g/f for a short while, but I got in touch with her. Very sad :(

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Stay safe, TBBS'ers from Japan.

As bad as this is, it's fortunate the people of Japan are so well-trained and experienced in how to respond to earthquakes and tsunamis. That will greatly reduce the number of fatalities.

I fell asleep with the CNN on, so I woke up at 3:30 AM and see a map with a tsunami warning for Hawaii and the West Coast. Here in Huntington Beach since we're curved away from the wave and blocked by Point Conception further north, they're just issuing an advisory and evacuating the beaches and pier but not our homes inland. The higher waves are supposed to hit around 8:45 AM, but there's no expectation of flooding inland.

The footage is unbelievable. That shot of the wall of water with flames on top moving over the farmland while carrying a big fishing boat was amazing.

CNN is saying there's a ferry in Japan with 100+ people that they haven't been able to contact. Hopefully it's just a communications problem.

FOX's reporter in the Philippines is reporting a rumbling and a water surge hitting Luzon. Hopefully everyone is okay there.

Apparently there's also a nuclear power plant experiencing a coolant problem in Japan; but no danger of a meltdown.

I've got a cousin serving at Pearl Harbor. They've been evacuating, so I'm sure he'll be okay.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

One girl, as she was leaving with her mother, came up to me and told me that I had made her feel better, and gave me a hug, so that was heartwarming.

Good job. I'm glad you are ok and were able to help in some way. Stay safe.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

According to the BBC news website, the semi-official news agency Jiji Press are reporting that between 200 and 300 dead bodies have been found on a beach near Sendai. Horrific and devastating.

In slightly happier news, my dad has managed to contact his girlfriend and she and her family are all okay.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

It's really horrifying :(

It's hard to be prepared against a tsunami you have no warnings for. Elburro I'm glad your Japanese connections are okay, and the trekbbs'ers as well. Terrible times.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I heard Hawai'i also was hit by a 10M tsunami?

*scared for peeps*

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Terrible, terrible event.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

My niece who has been lving in Japan for the past few years just recently updated her blog to report on the quake: Link.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

CNN was saying that there's definitely been damage and that it was fortunate that they evacuated people. There will still be more, possibly worse waves coming later.

A couple miles north of me in Seal Beach they ordered a Navy amphibious landing ship that was resupplying ammo at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station to put out to sea ahead of the waves which will be arriving in a couple hours, presumably because they're worried about water flooding the deck. Conventional ships in San Diego are going to remain in harbor though.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

They're now talking about possible evacuations for coastal Northern California and Oregon.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I've been living in Japan since the '80s <snip>.

I am alive. My story is as follows.

<snip>... and doing my zombie impression that they can't get enough of.

Zombie impression during earthquake=priceless.

Hi, this is my first post here, but been reading for a while.

I live about an hour from Tokyo by train, in Shizuoka prefecture. Luckily there has been minimal damage here.

What a way to welcome you to the BBS. I'm glad you've joined us and i'm glad you're safe.

It's so good to hear you guys are ok.

Sending positive vibes to everyone over there, and now, as i hear it, in Ca, Oregon and Washington as well. My thoughts are with you. STAY SAFE.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

My brother's living just outside Tokyo. Thankfully, he sent me a message that he's OK. The Tsunami wasn't anywhere near him. He said the earthquake felt a lot like plane turbulence, but I didn't get to ask him the details.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

How far inland is the waves go?! It looked like it was all farmland and just kept going and going.
