Japan hit by 9.0 earthquake.

live stream of NHK

I hope all the posters and all your friends and family, if you have any there, are all ok. I heard from a lifelong friend who said the damage is bad but the injuries are not at this point. Cell serice is overloaded and net servers are as well, according to her..

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I have a friend on the far side of Japan who didn't feel it.

I've got another friend in Beijing, 2500km away, who did feel it.

Hope you are safe dude. They were reporting that the Tsunami might affect you in about 12 hours. They were also saying that while it won't be big (probably just a metre high), I just wonder about Aftershocks.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I've been living in Japan since the '80s, and we usually ignore the little evueryday tremors. Now my house looks like it was ransacked but with no real damage except coffee on a carpet. I think this is the first time I've even had to pick up so much as a piece of paper because of quake. In my neighborhood that 8.9 was only 6, being 240 miles from the epicenter. But we have been getting aftershocks for more than two hours now.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Japan is probably the most earthquake, tsunami-prepared country in existence. Top notch infrastructure. They should cope well.

Yeah, I hope so. The pictures are still fucking horrifying though and the economic damage surely is enormous either way even if there aren't many deaths.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I am alive. My story is as follows.

I was at the elementary school where I work. It happened right between my last class for the day and the start of the clubs. So there were no groups of children anywhere doing anything structured, everyone was in the middle of a transition. Which means it was the worst possible time for an earthquake to happen. I was in the gym at the time just hanging out with the badminton and ping pong club members. We were on the stage when the quake struck, and I was the only teacher there, so I got everyone under the desk and we toughed it out. A lot of the folding chairs collapsed and some of the posters fell down. It was the biggest earthquake I have been in, but there was no serious damage.

We went outside to gather as a group and wait for the rest of the teachers, as they have practiced many times. I noticed then that while a lot of the kids thought it was cool and exciting, a number of the girls were seriously frightened and crying. The other teachers, when they showed up, were too busy doing head counts and checking to see where everyone had gone to worry about crying children, so I sat down near a group of girls who were upset and tried to reassure them. I managed to get almost all of them laughing, referencing things we'd done in class and doing my zombie impression that they can't get enough of.

Then the quake came back and was worse this time. Two girls in particular were just balling. I offered each one of my hands and they grabbed on as if for dear life, while their friends also tried to calm them down somewhat. It died down again, and we all just sat together, me trying to comfort a group of several dozen, at least, Japanese girls who had gathered around me during the quake. After the worst of the aftershocks finished I pulled out my iPod touch and showed them some of the goofier pictures of myself and my pets and my friends and got most of them giggling again. Their parents started showing up to take them home, and I hung out there for an hour longer than I am paid to work because I got the sense that if I were to leave, a number of the students would seriously lose their calm. One girl, as she was leaving with her mother, came up to me and told me that I had made her feel better, and gave me a hug, so that was heartwarming.

I'm back at my apartment now where thankfully everything has made it through okay, except the garbage that got dumped on the ground. Unfortunately cell phones are down at the moment so I can't hang out with my friends. The trains are also stopped. As I am typing this, there is another aftershock occurring and I expect there will be more to follow. Oh well. I guess it's an experience I would have been without, otherwise. At least I have survived to tell the tale.

I live 200m above sea level, should be safe here. Thanks for the concern. :)

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Goji, I am really glad to hear you're safe. Please continue to be safe, and all my best to your friends and neighbors there in Japan.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Looking at the power of this quake I think it's pretty safe to say that if this happened in possibly *ANY* other country in the world there would be horrendously more levels of damage than we're seeing in Japan. That's how serious they take their earthquake code and how prepared they are for them. I think what we're going to see is the most damage is from the Tsunami waves. I heard on CNN that they said the wave took out the Sendai Airport in the Miyagi prefecture and wiped it out. The airport is very close to the coast.

I fear we're going to see more casualties from countries hit by the tsunami as it impacts other countries than we will see from Japan itself.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I can't find any confirmation of this anywhere, but a Fox News correspondent said he got word from Japan's meteorological agency that the town of Kurihara has been "completely destroyed". Again, can't find anything online about it. ETA: He also said over 4 million building around Tokyo are without power.

Watching video of the tsunami just tearing through everything. It's almost unreal. :(

ETA2: Also, the Tsunami Watch for the US west coast has been updated to a Warning.

Wow. Hope everyone makes it through this okay. Is there any word what's happening with the tsunamis for other places? I've got a couple relatives in Taiwan at the moment...

Taiwan and dozens (if not hundreds) of other countries/islands/whatever are under Tsunami warnings and CNN has been saying the first tsunami waves will be impacting Taiwan by around 9:40AM GMT. Which is in about 20 mins.

They have no idea what the size of waves will be, just when they will begin impacting on the coastlines of various nations.

Over 20 countries are under Tsunami Warnings, including Taiwan.

CNN

ETA: Ah, never mind. While I'm editing this, is anyone here in Hawaii, or any other places in the tsunami's path?

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Watching live coverage from BBC News.
Destruction seems very bad in Japan:(
The water has swept entire houses, cars, bridges...everything with it:borg: plus there is a massive fire in an oil refinery.
Very horrible situation..and some areas have not been yet hit by the tsunamis, so I believe the death toll might be very high.

My deepest condolences to those who have lost a loved one.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

I live in Oregon and we're under tsunami warning. Been trying to reach people in the area since I got the warning and woke up, a lot of them are still asleep :( God dammit, I'm so worried for them... WAKE UP FOR FUCKS SAKE!

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Hi, this is my first post here, but been reading for a while.

I live about an hour from Tokyo by train, in Shizuoka prefecture. Luckily there has been minimal damage here.

I was at my school when the quake struck. It felt like being on a boat, swaying and rocking. Luckily the kids had all gone home at the time, so I was able to get out of the building. I then stood outside and watched it sway.

This is a coastal town, so we`re on alert for the expected tsunami, but there has not yet been one here.

My thoughts go out to any other TrekBBS members affected by this.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Official death toll in Japan just jumped from 5 to 17. Unfortunately we all know that it's going to get much, much higher. :(

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Bloody Hell, this is unbelievable. :( The video of the tsunami sweeping up boats and burning buildings across the countryside is mind-boggling. I hope most people have escaped, but I can't imagine there won't be massive loss of life. It looks horrifying.

Google has tsunami warnings for other countries on its main search page. At least they will have time to prepare and get away.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 earthquake.

Though the tsunami reached Taiwan about 15-30 minutes ago, it doesn't seem to have done any damage. A report from Taipei has said that there was only about 10cm raise in water.
