James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful)

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

I must admit, the pompadour hairstyle for Kirk was... well, it got a grimace from me and a laugh from anyone else who saw it, in my circle of acquaintances, at least. A younger viewer mentioned to me what his impression was: that this was "period hair" for the early 70s (had Trek not been cancelled). I then had to point out that nobody in the 70s wore pompadours. That was only popular as one of the "goofy styles" of the 1950s. So I can't begin to imagine WHY you'd wear such a silly haircut. I mean... honestly... the sheer volume of work that goes into a hairstyle like that is something you'll NEVER see from anyone in the service, or anyone who's been in the service.

Shatner's hair (whether natural or artificial) always represented a reasonable navy-style haircut... trimmed short and dealt with by running a towel over the head and then a quick comb through. Some of the other folks had more "styled" hair (Kelly, to a small extent... Doohan to a large extent, Nimoy to an even larger extent), but Shatner's "do" was reasonably military.

For the record, I have "Shatner hair." DEFINITELY thinning out with age, too. But no rug for me. ;) I'm actually sort of looking forward to the day when I've lost enough that I don't even have to run a comb through... just get out of the shower and dry off my dome. But I'm not anxious to shave it... again, too damned much effort involved. So I just keep it cut short.

Nobody who's served would be caught dead with a pompadour. And Kirk, like it or not, was a military commander.

Bingo! Everyone please pay attention, because that is the crux of pretty much everything.

Trekkies are the biggest pains in the ass and are impossible to please. Why do you think Paramount doesn't try?

If memory serves, Mr. Cawley's job is an Elvis impersonator. Obviously he'd have to mock up his hair so he could impersonate Elvis, no? Pays the bills. It's less of his re-imagination of James Kirk, and more of a necessity.

And, to be fair to Cawley, he wasn't criticising the show recasting everybody or being unfaithful to canon, both of which his show arguably is... just for not replicating a 1960s look. Which by and large is what NV is.

Exactly so.

I agree with most of your assessment here (esp. about the pompadour not being a '70s do), but the argument about people "in the service" never having such a haircut seems odd, given we're talking about a story ostensibly taking place 300 years from now. Styles change (by definition), and nobody can predict what sorts of hairstyles would be aligned with "military" people vs. others 300 years hence.

Remember that just over 200 years ago, most European military officers wore big, poofy wigs and pony tails tied with ribbons :).

But I do agree with the bigger point -- that, in the context of Star Trek -- the pompadour looked pretty silly.

Yeah I'll believe this when I see it. I expect some changes but I highly doubt they'd screw with it that radically.

100% agreed.

They'll make the blinky-light computer screens on the ship and the control interfaces and panels a little more up-to-date and realistic in appearance but aside from cosmetic changes on the periphery so the ship doesn't have a limited-budget/1960s feel I doubt they're going to do much.

I for one am looking forward to a few changes in the ship. I love the old girl but am really looking forward to seeing what ILM will do with her and an updated bridge.

One question though, since ILM is doing the FX, will the saucer look like the Millennium Falcon now?

I like this design.

(Sorry I can't post the pics here. I'm still a noob.)

No thank you. I'll take the production version of TOS Enterprise over everything else every day of the week and twice on Sundays. So will the average movie viewer if the production values are high.

For forty years people have come to expect the TOS Enterprise to look a certain way. Radically changing a pop culture icon burned into the memories of millions around the globe would only backfire on everyone.

Agreed. Two words: New Coke

Don't remind me. I was only ten or eleven at the time, but even then I could tell the new stuff tasted like carbonated ass.

The backseat of a 2245 Connie.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think for most people a good story will trump any design changes that are made with the Enterprise and/or uniforms. I don't know about the interior of the ship, but I find it hard to believe they'd alter the exterior too radically.

You're right Tralah but you know the die hard purists would go nova if they tinker with the 1701 too much. Nothing against them either, btw...
