Re: J. Ryan Speaks About Her ‘Intentionally Unpleasant’ Experiences on

His death would have been off camera in Scorpion II if they had fired him.

An extra with a sheet over his face.

Of course I have no idea why I keep saying "The Money! the Money!" when their weekly budget actually increased by 1.3 million dollars per episode between season 3 and 4.

Star Trek Voyager (1995)
$3,500,000 (per episode) (Season 4-7)
$2,200,000 (Per Episode)

Holy shit.

Space Above and Beyond cost 5 million dollars per episode?!?

Re: J. Ryan Speaks About Her ‘Intentionally Unpleasant’ Experiences on

If the people behind voyager truly thought Seven surpassed her initial marketing purpose they would have stopped using the boob outfit like they did with Troi. Granted it's not the writers fault if producers said "you must have that boob outfit. It's the only thing keeping ratings up." (but if that's the case, then what does that really say about what made the character popular at the time?)

If her character was really the thing that grabbed viewers then did Hugh in I, Borg also draw in as high of ratings?

Re: J. Ryan Speaks About Her ‘Intentionally Unpleasant’ Experiences on

I find it interesting how Braga fucked over RDM on Voyager,-from my understanding a much more egregious offense than that of Jeri and/or Kate--yet it was more or less water under the bridge within a couple of years. Meanwhile, Jeri and Kate have been engaged in a Cold War since the Clinton administration.

Chalk it up to the female temperament, I suppose, along with the standard insecurity of the actor class.

How exactly did Braga "fuck over" Robbie McNeill?

I'm fairly certain the "RDM" referenced above is in reference to Ronald D. Moore, whose bad blood with Braga after their short tenure together on Voyager (and later reconciliation) is well documented.

Those who were in charge of the show are to blame for the problems.

They created an unpleasant situation by firing Lien and making Seven the star character of the show.

If they had kept Lien and added Seven as a more low-profile character, there wouldn't have been any problems.

Well, for starters, my understanding was they were going to write out Harry at first (hence the deadly infection in "Scorpion" that he recovered from almost immediately in Part 2) until Garrett was profiled in "People".

This. Wang was listed that year as one of People's "50 Most Beautiful People" list and the producers realized they had some good PR there, so they chose to keep Kim and axe Kes. But then that's the actual fact of the matter, one Lynx has been unable to wrap his head around for the last decade.

Oh, I'm totally able to understand why they decided to keep Kim in this case. What I question is that they changed their plans due to a stupid poll among the staff of a silly magazine, keeping a certain characters for the looks instead of keeping a better character.

And Wang was only at the 25th place in that poll!

I also think that those in charge more and less insulted the whole cast by their decisions. What they actually told everyone was: "This series is so bad and you are all so lousy that we have to bring in a "sexy babe" as the main character to save the show."

Which wasn't the truth. They had a great show with a great premise, great actors and great characters. The weak link were the writers and producers. They should have fired themselves.

As for this constant re-runs of bringing up a possible Mulgrew-Ryan conflict, we are only presented with the opinion from one side. It would be interesting to see the other side's view of it too.

Also this forum is pretty dead - nobody mentioned yet that Jeri has landed a major guest role on NCIS?!

What? Ryan will show up in the show which replaced Voyager as my favorite show?

It's like she's haunting me. Well I guess I deserve that. :)

She's a good actress and I look forward to see her there. I wonder what her character will be like.

Jeri's first two episodes got a bump, and then there was a steady decline until the ratings of every show in season seven including the final was more than half that of season 1 and 2.

What they were doing was not working.

It was good Star Trek, but it was bad TV.

That graph says that DS9 was more consistently ranked higher than DS9. Was that true?

Re: J. Ryan Speaks About Her ‘Intentionally Unpleasant’ Experiences on

eh, I was just making a joke about 2 DS9's existing in the same space.

Ohforpetessake. I recommend people explore the stories on fanfiction.net. There are over 8000 Star Trek Voyager stories, not counting the crossovers. Some of these stories are novel-length, and quite good. Of course some stories are soapish, but that's part of exploring the characters, instead of going for plot over character.

One of my favorite authors there has written the Seven/Chakotay relationship in a variety of ways, exploring the different scenarios the series writers could have used to have them as a couple, rather than the abrupt "suddenly they were having a picnic in the cargo bay" route.

There are also numerous Janeway/Seven stories, and even some B'Elanna/Seven stories.

Seven is a complex character who inspires people to write about her. Personally, the only Voyager stories I enjoy more are the ones about Tom Paris' post-Endgame life.

Re: J. Ryan Speaks About Her ‘Intentionally Unpleasant’ Experiences on

One of the many lovely ladies on this board wrote a Seven of Nine/Chakotay fanfic, and I enjoyed it immensely.

As for Seven herself, Jeri knocked that role out of the park. It was an eye candy role, but she turned it into a full course dinner. I figure the Mulgrew stuff is pretty much water under the bridge now. I hope so, because I respect both actors.

Re: J. Ryan Speaks About Her ‘Intentionally Unpleasant’ Experiences on

It's a testament to Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan's acting that, even if the women hated each other, it never showed through in their performances.

That's certainly true, it really didn't show. Some of the best moments were when Janeway and Seven were having one of their talks.

I had thought people might realize that shows that are "pure garbage" don't usually attract such a lot of attention and inspire that much effort to create so many more stories. I assure you that the vast majority of the stories I've read there don't even mention Seven's "assets."

Several of them are rather poignant about the question of whether she can or cannot have children, though.

And they don't even include my Kes stories which you find on the Kes Website (link below)! :techman:

No doubt about it. :)
The next step is that I'll buy the season 4-7 DVD:s and start watching them (except for one season 6 episode which I will never watch again).

Re: J. Ryan Speaks About Her ‘Intentionally Unpleasant’ Experiences on

Well I hope you do. You might miss your main character but as far as Star Trek goes seasons 4-7 contain GREAT Star Trek :)

You should put your stories up on fanfic.net!
