I've seen discussion here about Starfleet being or not being military, so here's another viewpoint.

What defines "Military" in a few hundred years may NOT look "Military" by today's standards. There are aspects of militaries from just a few hundred years back that we would think seem out of place too.

English/British Army officers "buying" their posts (Coronetcy, Colonelcy etc...). Absolutely NOT a thing today.

There are enough historical examples to draw inspiration for a series where not every episode has things blowing up yet still has the command in a recognizable form to the viewer.

HMS Challenger and HMS Beagle did scientific work while being crewed and captained by the Royal Navy in the age of sail. The Antartica research stations are indirectly supported by the military of the nation they work for, yet scientists run them.

I'm fine with Starfleet being the Coast Guard. Coast guard ships have won commendations for their performance in combat, yet their role is to enforce the peace. They still have a military command structure.

Why do you hate, @1001001?
He's my second favorite Mod, I like him just fine.

It's a military, but one created in an era of history where humans here on Earth had finally resolved our petty tribal hangups and stopped shooting at and nuking one another. At least 600 million dead and shattered and radioactive cities on every populated continent can do that sort of thing, at least in fiction.

That military, populated by more enlightened and chastened humans born in the decades after the final mushroom clouds had risen into the air, decided to have more noble goals than just being ready to fire back if aggressors shot at them. So we explored the cosmos that Zefram Cochrane's warp engine first opened up and conducted scientific surveys. If that makes Starfleet the Dr. Robert Ballard oceanographic fleet with weapons and a military rank structure, so be it. But it's a military.
