I've seen discussion here about Starfleet being or not being military, so here's another viewpoint.
No, instead they've transferred those petty tribal hangups, shootings, and nukings to focus on alien civilizations instead of humanity. Unless, of course, those humans resist the rule of a Federation that abandoned them to whatever whims of fate said alien civilizations see fit to inflict upon them simply for living on the wrong side of an arbitrary line.
Oh, the Federation frequently sucks and is full of hypocrites. That much didn't change after World War III and First Contact. For all our progress after the 21st century we still fail and badly. But that's part of what makes Trek so engrossing. I'd rather see us fail and do regrettable things like condemn innocent people for living on the wrong side of a border than be some sterile utopian paradise that gets 99% of things right.
