In the bonus features on the Special Edition Blu-Ray/DVD, Charles Hallahan, who plays Norris, says he played the scene where he's offered command of the group and turns it down because subconsciously he knew that there was something wrong with him, even though the script didn't say so.
Then during the blood test scene, if you look carefully at Palmer, he's the only one not looking at MacReady; he knows he's a Thing and the blood test is going to expose him.
