Seth MacFarlane Created "The Orville" To Fulfill A Need Star Trek Had Abandoned

I'm a little shocked to see McFarlane say it would be that easy to just jump right back into production, I would think after four years they would pretty much have to start everything over from scratch, at least when it comes to sets, costumes, effects, cast, and stuff like that.

The only real obstacle is Seth's schedule.

The thing I do not understand is, if Seth's schedule is the problem, why not have Grayson be promoted to captain and Bortus promoted to first officer for the season? And make S4 be The Search for Mercer (and maybe Anaya). I know that Adrianne Palicki says she's out and not returning, but I wonder if she'd come back if her character got promoted.

So much time had passed between the production of S3 and today that Claire's oldest child could be a cadet or ensign on The Orville by now.

That still wouldn't free up MacFarlane's schedule, as he reportedly insists every episode be written and directed by him, which was another frustration Palicki voiced for why she isn't interested in coming back. Not to mention, this scenario completely defeats the show's purpose of serving as wish fulfilment for MacFarlane to be a starship captain.

In regards to writers, Seth should take a page from Star Trek, and hire talented writers and talented directors. Still some around from TNG for example. But I have a feeling if he does that, he'll soon found out they're doing his show better than him.

Orville did have other writers and directors in the first two seasons, including Star Trek alum such as Brannon Braga and Jonathan Frakes. Other writers stuck around for the third season, but MacFarlane directed all those episodes. Supposedly, were the fourth to happen, all the episodes would be written and directed by him.

I know, I contributed directors when the episodes first aired, to IMDb, but the whole point was season three and now he wants to keep doing all of them. Between his busy schedule, FX heavy episodes that require long production times, and this insistence, it's becoming increasingly unlikely a fourth season will ever happen. Just too many road blocks.

I hadn't heard about Macfarlane insisting on writing and directing every episode on top of starring in it. That's hard enough on it's own, but when you consider all of the other stuff he's involved with that's downright insane.

Without her, my interest in the new season is instantly cut in half....

Seth's busy schedule gets even busier: two seasons ordered for the "Family Guy" spin-off series "Stewie":

Man, stick a fork in it -- season four will never happen.

Last I recall, he wanted to make his Trek-style show serious while the network wanted more comedy. The odd thing is, "The Orville" had a great blend of both in its first season. Tempered but not eliminated in its second, it still remained engaging. For exaple (IMHO, YMMV) is that TNG's "The Wounded" walked so that "Blood of Patriots" could run... and Isaac's storylines definitely bested TNG's content regarding Data having intercourse with humans as well as besting VOY with its stories of robots developing emotions and sentience then killing their creators, even if other aspects of Isaac's arc were rushed-- but what hurt the show the most was the limited episode count, resulting in too many rushed story arcs. Not sure which of the three running sagas was rushed the most. Probably Isaac's, given their alleged intelligence and single-minded intent to destroy anything biological in some plots, but faffing about with "surrender" and other bollocks. I'd say the Krill subplot was the strongest overall...

And "Pria" is an unmitigated classic.

Many episodes have a harking or callback to something Trek, with most going in refreshing if not original directions.

And yet, the more of season 3 I'd seen, the more the show was seemingly becoming a po-faced pastiche of itself and the Isaac and Kaylon clips had me laughing for all the wrong reasons. Add in atl east two integral regular crew who would not return for season 4, and I don't think it'd succeed. (LaMarr and Grayson if memory serves. It was bad enough getting "Wheel of security chief" every season, growing to adore them and then they vanish... at least Alara got a good sendoff, before the finale having a reveal that was less than the sum of its parts.)

The show had its mojo under FOX, let's face it. The move to Hulu (post-merger with FOX being purchased) and new production team started the biggest quality dip. But, as with "Sliders", those first two seasons - warts and all - are largely magic.

I remember back in the day he talked in interviews how he wanted some comedy and a future where technology isn't the enemy. Now he's saying the network wanted comedy and he promptly made the deadly antagonist of the show -- technology (the Kaylon).

I've been a fan of the Orville from the get-go, and as much as I wanted to watch the 3rd season, I've never had access to Disney+, so there might be others in my situation that couldn't make the switch, which makes me wonder if the move also came with a loss in viewership. And that's the thing with streaming services and shows that move. Don't automatically assume that one is going to have access to it.

i still wonder what orville season 4 would be about

more space exploring lol star trek strange new world style or star trek starfleet academy style

This articulates my feelings on the matter to a tee. I still haven't been able to watch season 3; though from what I've read, there's a strong possibility that I would find it disappointing as the humour was a big part of the reason I enjoyed the first two seasons so much, and by all accounts it was very diluted in S3.

I'm quite annoyed that it hasn't been made available on disc, and probably never will be. And while I'm having a moan... it's very disappointing to me that seasons 1 & 2 are only available on DVD and not Blu-ray, especially as when it was broadcast on Fox in HD, it was one of the few programs that I can remember the picture quality being noticeably superior to most HD broadcasts.

Yeah, I agree. I likely would have been disappointed in the 3rd as well, but it's the principle. As it is, I simply can't get too excited about any streaming series anymore. I kind of felt let down by the fact that it had to move. I've had had the same thing happen to Star Trek moving to Paramount when for decades it had been available on Crave for Canadian audiences. The streaming landscape is far from ideal. It's so fragmented.

I recommend you subscribe to Disney Plus and watch it. Unlike the first two seasons, the show transforms from a comedy into a serious science fiction show. And in my opinion, it gets better.

Unfortunately it's a bit more of a sticking point as I have a limited income and can't be spending much money on streaming services.

It's technically on Hulu, not Disney+, but with all of show's crossing services and the two merging eventually, I guess it's kind of on both.

I enjoyed New Horizons (Season 3) just as much as Season 1 and 2, I don't remember there being that much of change in tone between the later parts of Season 2 and New Horizons.

I don't get this, I would think there enough people out there with game systems and Blu-Ray players out there that would a big market out there for Blu-Rays. Ever since I got my PS4 I've always gone for the Blu-Ray whenever possible for my physical media.

Do you sign up for any streaming services at all? If you can at least afford one, you can always do what I do and just rotate through. I only sign up for 2 or 3 at a time and just rotate 1 or 2 of them every few months.
