Its a tough watch

One, it isn't odd to like TOS (save maybe in the TNG forum). Two, they like Voyager. Three, they were up until 11 PM my time which is just ridiculous ;)
Liking TOS is not one of the three. Without commenting on what the two others are, then/than is the second of the three.

Yeah, I thought starting in S3 on an attempted rewatch would be easy. It has not been such.

The season starts out weaker in my opinion, but there are a lot of stronger episodes as it goes along.

My ratings for Season 3:

(7) Meh * (Skip)
(8) Decent ** (Consider)
(11) Good *** (Watch)

Evolution *
The Ensigns of Command **
The Survivors *
Who Watches The Watchers ***
The Bonding *
Booby Trap **
The Enemy **
The Price **
The Vengeance Factor **
The Defector ***
The Hunted **
The High Ground **
Deja Q ***
A Matter of Perspective *
Yesterday's Enterprise ***
The Offspring ***
Sins of the Father ***
Allegiance ***
Captain's Holiday **
Tin Man *
Hollow Pursuits ***
The Most Toys ***
Sarek ***
Ménage à Troi *
Transfigurations *
The Best of Both Worlds ***

Schisms is one of those episodes people either like or hate. I like it now that I've watched it again. Some scenes did jar and drag on a bit, like Data's poetry reading just went on too bloody long. Time to shove him inside a nacelle while turned on.

Episode was properly creepy and good. The ending left me thinking there was more to come but yet another plot they just dropped because they only had one more season to go and that was that.

EDIT: Ship in a bottle.
The way the episode starts left me wondering a bit then when they do explain how they solved this week's problem I still didn't see where the switch was made. It did have some funny lines though like Picard musing how his real world could be a simulation in some little box on someone's table "wink wink" yes it's a TV show baldy. I didn't mind this episode.

EXTRA EDIT:

I've just crossed over into season 7 and I find there's a few episodes here I like so listed them below

Interface
Force Of Nature
Parallels
The Pegasus
Homeward - OK yeah I didn't mind this one this time around

Next up is Eye Of The Beholder, can't stand Masks

Genesis. Eek I never watched this one even when it was on TV or the first time I had my set of DVDS but watched this one today. That was one of the worst episodes ever, I'd say even worse then then "Threshold."

Journey's End was also a bit of a stinker.

I’ve seen a lot of people recommending Datalore from S1.

I agree that, unfortunately this is pretty much required viewing due to the number of threads that continue from it as the series moves along.

But man, this is an absolutely crap episode. It’s bottom-3 for S1. Really, really bad. Almost like a 13 year old wrote it.

I also don’t necessarily agree that the show gets “better” in the later seasons. It definitely changes, but I’m not sure it’s better. The weird, atmospheric sci-if tone from the earlier seasons gets replaced with too much soap-opera and run-of-the-mill stuff that could have been done in a non-sci-fi show.

I’ve had the BR disks for 5 years now. I still can’t get through a rewatch. It’s not that it’s a bad show. It’s just dreadfully boring about 60% of the time.

I agree with you about Datalore. It just seemed like a very immature episode, especially with the "Shut up Wesley". It provided good backstory for Data, but it's really overrated. I think the first good episode of Season 1 was Where No One Has Gone Before, but really the two great episodes of the season were 11001001 and Conspiracy. The show got a little better in Season 2.

I had that issue with Breaking Bad. Watch the first two seasons and I could not get into it.

To me season 2 is the worst season then it really picks up in 3.

Datalore is a terrible episode. "Shut up Wesley" was the only highlight. But it's one where they made the entire crew look like morons.

I just watched Breaking Bad and I liked how Season 2 came together. It basically started with how the season ended and we got to see how the puzzle came together. I think the show got progressively better as it went, with Season 4 being the best season.

About 'Breaking Bad', the best part of that series is obviously John de Lancie. =)
The program itself was fun at first but got ruined after the main characters started killing people who didn't really deserve it.

I actually think S2 of TNG is a lot like S3 of TOS, and by that I mean terribly underrated because it contains some bottom-of-the-barrel stinkers.

Yes, you have heaps of dreadful dogshit like

The Outrageous Okona
The Schizoid Man
Unnatural Selection
Manhunt
Shades of Gray

And tepid, forgettable meh like

The Child
Loud As A Whisper
The Icarus Factor

But you also have some pretty entertaining stuff (at least, by my tastes and standards) like

Where Silence Has Lease
Elementary Dear Data
A Matter of Honor
Measure of a Man
Contagion
The Royale
Time Squared
Q Who
Peak Performance

Overall, it’s a pretty good hit rate by my measure.

You should absolutely not subject yourself to the totality of Seasons 1 and 2. Find some "best of" lists and just stick to those. There are very, very few in Season 1 worth your time. I'd say definitely watch the pilot (it sounds like you did.) While far from great (or even good), it does do an effective job of setting up the characters and is called back in a major way in the (very good) series finale.

The only great thing about the pilot was saucer separation.

The Jellies were interesting. Them torturing Zorn ended any potential enjoyment. Q torturing the crew also ended enjoyment.

End credits definitely ranks as the high point.

Hey @Roacho, how is your rewatch going? Any highlights (and/or lowlights :scream:) of the episodes you chose? Where are you up to now?

In the case of TNG I'd recommend just starting at Evolution which is almost a soft reboot of TNG. I think of it as TNG PILOT 2.0.
It's very much a new beginning the show. There is an instant new vibe about the show from the very start. New uniforms. Lighting has been changed. Everything is just more confident somehow. And it's interesting because behind the scenes it was not exactly a comfortable show at that time. It was a show very much running on adrenaline I suspect after the very mixed results of S2. But thankfully it was a brilliant season and helped lay the groundwork for the show as it was for the last 4 seasons.
