And plenty of the bad stuff has also been used to give us some great tie-ins, like The Final Frontier, which most people seem to consider one of the worst movies in the franchise, and yet stuff from it was used fantastically in the Vanguard books.There's plenty of bad stuff in the canon. And plenty of good stuff that isn't.
Oh, really? Hmmmm, I read the first and didn't decide to continue, in spite of numerous references to its events and lore and the like in other novels.
The Trek Movie Podcast interviewed writers Kirsten Beyer and David Mack and director Fred Greenhalgh and when the question of whether or not the show was canon came up, Beyer, who of course has worked on Discovery, Picard and Starfleet Academy, replied -- "What I can tell you is that for the people currently working on Star Trek, this will be treated as canon, meaning it will not be overwritten or contradicted, and will be, when possible, incorporated into future stories."
