Oh, really? Hmmmm, I read the first and didn't decide to continue, in spite of numerous references to its events and lore and the like in other novels.

This is the first thing that I've heard that actually makes me intrigued to go back and pick the series back up...

Oh yes, I know it has quite an excellent reputation, and is quite beloved! The first book just really didn't grab me. I don't remember specifically why, I think it was thing to do with the characters. And there was something like a Vulcan woman and an undercover Klingon spy? Whose relationship I just found ludicrous. But again, the memories are vague.

But as I said, I have heard nothing but good things about it since. I am well aware of being in the extreme minority, and I don't even clearly remember why.

The Trek Movie Podcast interviewed writers Kirsten Beyer and David Mack and director Fred Greenhalgh and when the question of whether or not the show was canon came up, Beyer, who of course has worked on Discovery, Picard and Starfleet Academy, replied -- "What I can tell you is that for the people currently working on Star Trek, this will be treated as canon, meaning it will not be overwritten or contradicted, and will be, when possible, incorporated into future stories."
