Oh, really? Hmmmm, I read the first and didn't decide to continue, in spite of numerous references to its events and lore and the like in other novels.

This is the first thing that I've heard that actually makes me intrigued to go back and pick the series back up...

Oh yes, I know it has quite an excellent reputation, and is quite beloved! The first book just really didn't grab me. I don't remember specifically why, I think it was thing to do with the characters. And there was something like a Vulcan woman and an undercover Klingon spy? Whose relationship I just found ludicrous. But again, the memories are vague.

But as I said, I have heard nothing but good things about it since. I am well aware of being in the extreme minority, and I don't even clearly remember why.

The Trek Movie Podcast interviewed writers Kirsten Beyer and David Mack and director Fred Greenhalgh and when the question of whether or not the show was canon came up, Beyer, who of course has worked on Discovery, Picard and Starfleet Academy, replied -- "What I can tell you is that for the people currently working on Star Trek, this will be treated as canon, meaning it will not be overwritten or contradicted, and will be, when possible, incorporated into future storytelling."

I guess that settles it as much as a canon question can be settled (with the understanding that even things considered canonical by one set of creators can be ignored by later ones, like Voyager: Mosaic and Pathways, or entire movies in various horror franchises).

Although I'm still not sure what elements from this could be incorporated into future stories, except maybe the Elboreans.

I assume it's really just more in the sense of "Well, if something comes up, we'll look to this for reference."

If SNW has La'an looking at a list of Augment names that went missing, Ivan and Ursula and Meddoh will be on the list. That sort of thing.

One assumes from context that nothing is actually planned at this point, but just sort of 'if, at any point in the future, we decide to touch on these subjects, we'll reference what the Khan podcast did.'

^ Well, this isn't to say that La'An couldn't find some notation somewhere as Spock was able to put together that there were 80 unaccounted for Augments in Space Seed, but the fact that there were 80 unaccounted for Augments was not part of the historical record in Space Seed. Then again, that comes from the pre-temporal Cold War timeline, doesn't it?;)

Indeed.

Actually, I saw offhand mention of somewhere about Kirk running into Khan *before* Space Seed, and a new McCoy. I have NO idea what it was I saw, now, or where, as I quickly clicked away to avoid spoilers. But I strongly expected to see that in the SNW season 3 finale, with some time travel shenanigans, and was very surprised when that didn't happen!

So I was expecting something like this already...

This is no different than the situation with Jeri Taylor's Voyager novels, which she treated as canon while she was running the show, but once she left they were disregarded. The current writing staffs on the current Trek shows might consider the Khan audio canon, but when they leave and new writers take over, they will be under no obligation to do so.

So no, this doesn't mean there's a possibility you're favorite novel or comic is about to be canonized, nor does it represent any kind of a paradigm shift in the status of what is or isn't canon in the franchise.
