Is May 2009 going to be remembered as the best SCIFI month ever?

May has the potential to be great, but right now that's precarious at best. For each franchise, the last film is regard as being one of if not the weakest yet. That automatically raises the stakes for each of these films coming out next month.
All these freakin' months and I never noticed that connection. You are effin' right!

I'm trying to remember who I knew in high school that liked Star Trek. Off hand, a couple were smart AP types who were also in band, but they played sports too (not football or baseball, more like track and tennis). I guess they were part of the "smart people" circle, but were far from being social outcasts. Another wasn't a popular jock either, but his partying and womanizing ways was far from the nerd stereotype.

I guess there was only one who fell into the stereotype -- loud, glasses, lettered in debate, but he didn't give a damn what anyone thought of him.

There were very few I knew in high school, even among the fanboys, who easily fit the "nerd" stereotype.

I was regarded as smart, but I wasn't an academic superstar (classic very bright underachiever). Not a social butterfly, but had my small circle. Athletic, but nontraditional sports (competitive swimming). Not much luck with the ladies, but my first girlfriend, in my senior year, was a very lovely blond drill teamer from another high school. Also had a bit of a rep as a brawler, which I had gained from successfully dealing with a few bullies.

My close friends were "nerds"...well, I suppose one of them was the "classic" nerd, but even he had more social graces than one might think.

What was operating in your area, the gestapo?! That is sheer idiocy. Oh well one consolation is that such people are retards and end up selling real estate.

Actually the cheerleader just got enrolled in the FBI Academy from what I have heard (not making that up).

- Star Trek: This has me the most concerned. I think that the film has been updated for a new generation, but I think that the past will haunt it and keep people from the seats. I am only 23 years old and was in high school when Nemesis came out. A friend of mine (he was extremely popular/Quarterback of the Football team) went with me to see it. He was spotted going into the theatre by one of the cheerleaders and he went from being most popular to one of the least. People have attributed Star Trek with geeks and nerds - a label I've been called for years - and that is what I fear this will continue to be. Many see it as the rebirth of the franchise, I fear (because of the money sunk into it) that it'll be the death.
That's a REAL shame!:( INTOLERANT:censored: what town did this take place in anyway? remind me never to go to such a place!
Having seen it myself growing up and agree NX, that it seems to be Everytown, U.S.A.

I was watching west wing last night and they were talking about this... It's from the eps two bartlets:

"I was a telemarketer for about a week. Can't remember what we were selling but we worked off a script. 'Hi, good evening, my name is. . .' and Toby Ziegler was okay for New York but once we got into the other time zones I needed a name that wasn't going to bother anybody. . . "

"My family signed the Declaration of Independence. You think I have an ethnicity problem?" the President asks.

"Well, mine isn't between light skin and dark skin. . . it's between educated and masculine. Or between Eastern Academic elite and plain spoken. . . . Sir, I don't think I need to tell you that the level of respect with which the staff speaks of you doesn't change depending on whether or not you're in the room. . . . Well, there's always a bit of concern about the two Bartlets. The absent-minded professor with the 'Aw, Dad.' sense of humor. Disarming, unthreatening, good for all time zones. And the Nobel Laureate still searching for salvation. Lonely, frustrated. Lethal. . . .

For far too long this country has had a mentality that one can't be smart and manly at the same time... When did this start?

Yeah, it's going to be a kick ass month for movies. 3 of my favorite franchises get new installments.

June 1982 saw the release of E.T., Blade Runner and Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan. So no, May 2009 doesn't have a chance of being the best month ever - nor, for that matter, does May 1977.

Try summer 1989... Batman, Trek V, Licence to Kill, Indiana Jones III, Ghostbusters II and a few more all going head to head (and in some cases killing the franchises... though the actual films might have contributed to that).

Greater quantity of films doesn't necessarily make it a better "sci-fi month." I'm talking about a greater impact. May 1977....nothing compares.

Lol FBI/CIA are a bunch of sociopathic douchebags. Obeyers to pathological institutions. Very weird that you mention that though because just today as I was jogging I was thinking about the movie about those chicks who join FBI academy.

Don't forget John Carpenter's classic remake of The Thing came out that month in '82 :techman:

A flashy showy X-Men movie?

A un-needed Terminator sequel?

A shitty Star Trek rebooting?

May is hands down the worse month is this year.

Wasn't that on the back side of a writer strike too?

Feds is the movie you are thinking of. :techman:

While I'm eagerly anticipating all those movies, the best month of sci-fi film ever will be a month when movies like The Fountain, Solaris or Moon are box office hits. Here's wishing all the best for Moon.

Indeed.

I hate that for people today, a lot of SF are actually just comic book action films.

I prefer my SF to be like "Gattaca", "Contact" or even "AI".

Having people running around in tights in dark noir cities does NOT mean SF to me - it means campy comic books.

I think a lot of people here, in this closeted and safe environment have worked themselves up into a lather of frenzied excitement over how this film will make $500m(sorry - it IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN)domestically, will trump the Oscars next year and, because of its success, the morning after the movie comes out, they will emerge from their basements to a waiting crowd of beaming well-wishers who will carry them down main street, the ST theme playing while all the assembled townsfolk assure him that "You were RIGHT!!!!! ST REALLY IS GREAT!!!!! HOW COULD WE HAVE INSULTED YOU ALL THESE YEARS?!?! YOU ARE OUR NEW KING AND WE LOVE YOU!!!!!"

I think quite a few people here are pinning some kind of hope on this film's release that it will FINALLY give them some kind of acceptance in the wider community(JJ is their GOD!!!!1!)and people's eyes will finally be opened.

I agree with you, however. ST willonly ever always be STAR TREK. There is a ceiling on how much a ST film will earn. Granted, I DO believe that ceiling will be raised by the fact we have this uber producer's name attached to it. There are new KEWWWLL EFFFXS(ROXOOZZZ!!!1!!!!). Plus we have a semi "name" playing Spylock. Add to that the barrage of press this thing has been getting and, yes, this WILL make more than TVH or TUC.

The BIG mistake the suits made, however was spending $US150m+ on a STAR TREK FILM!!!!! That is like buying the oldest, most rundown house in the dodgiest area of your city and building a second story on top, adding fountains in the front yard and fitting the best appliances and fittings inside and then wondering why your astronomical asking price is laughed at by potential buyers.

No - ST will do okay but just okay. The football team won't be seen dead in the cinema it's playing in and the Cyley Myrus fans will be seeing Zac Effron for the seventh time that week.
