Is May 2009 going to be remembered as the best SCIFI month ever?

Is this next month going to be the best month ever or what!?

I think that we've hit a real time of sci-fi myself. Watching science fiction is no longer seen as "nerd territory", but as socially acceptable viewing material.

While I'm eagerly anticipating all those movies, the best month of sci-fi film ever will be a month when movies like The Fountain, Solaris or Moon are box office hits. Here's wishing all the best for Moon.

Moon, baby.

The director is already talking his next film. He wants to go scifi noir, Blade Runner style.

To a lesser degree there's also Night at the Museum 2 and I forget if Angels & Demons had any fantastical elements or not.

I'm sorry to say that I don't think so. I hope to be proven wrong but I have a feeling that the big movie of the month will end up being Wolverine.

- Wolverine: For some reason he's always been a very popular character that fans like. Personally I never liked him (and I'm the core demo), but I think that it'll do extremely well because of the Wolverine factor and the success of the previous films.

- Terminator Salvation: This has me concerned (and I'm a Terminator fan). I think that some of the aspects that are being brought forward are going to hurt their fanbase, but the action quotient will help to strengthen their sales. One of the biggest drawbacks will be if TSCC are cancelled or not. This will be a spillover because of the proximity of the announcement. Fox will announce their fall lineup three days before Salvation opens. This still has me thinking that WB will make the series and put it on CW (which is still being rumored including among the writing staff) if Fox ends it because they can't afford the bad press. They already sell it to Fox at a loss.

- Star Trek: This has me the most concerned. I think that the film has been updated for a new generation, but I think that the past will haunt it and keep people from the seats. I am only 23 years old and was in high school when Nemesis came out. A friend of mine (he was extremely popular/Quarterback of the Football team) went with me to see it. He was spotted going into the theatre by one of the cheerleaders and he went from being most popular to one of the least. People have attributed Star Trek with geeks and nerds - a label I've been called for years - and that is what I fear this will continue to be. Many see it as the rebirth of the franchise, I fear (because of the money sunk into it) that it'll be the death.

That's a REAL shame!:( INTOLERANT:censored: what town did this take place in anyway? remind me never to go to such a place!

What was operating in your area, the gestapo?! That is sheer idiocy. Oh well one consolation is that such people are retards and end up selling real estate.

Supposedly, Leonard Nimoy plays 24th century Spock and travels back in time in all three of these movies.

May has the potential to be great, but right now that's precarious at best. For each franchise, the last film is regard as being one of if not the weakest yet. That automatically raises the stakes for each of these films coming out next month. Until each film has been out for at least a couple of weeks, giving moviegoers time to see them at least a second time (a solid criterion for judging a film's success), there is no way to properly judge where the month will "rank" so to speak. Sure we have advanced word, but in the case of "Terminator: Salvation" and "Wolverine" that advanced word isn't exactly complete positivity. It's mixed at best. With "Trek XI", there is a great deal of excitement, but it's generated but ever-increasing hype what with the delayed opening of the film. In that case, it's even harder to tell just how great the film will be and again how great the month will be.

I think opening all those possible hits in one month will mean a repeat of last May, a couple will be hits and the others will be flops at the box office.

"This is not the future's past that Sarek warned me about. In this future's past, I am not sure we can save James T. Kirk and the mutants from this war."

I suspect all 3 movies will be let downs. I will go and see them anyway.

Well I'm going to do a comprehensive "What's going on all summer" thing later, but the heavy hitters are usually May...everybody celebrating getting out of school, then July 4th weekend.

****remember: the official reason this happened was due to the Writer's Strike, which as you recall, made the Christmas movie season so barren....****was this a blessing in disguise? Given how the economy was in COMPLETE AND UTTER FREEFALL over Christmas break, and its relatively (comparatively) stabilizing (sort of) now.....do you think people are more likely to pay money for these movies now as opposed to back at Christmas time?

Anyway, the result of that awful winter movie season, was we're essentially getting ALL the Christmas movies AND Summer movies at the same time.

A far cry from the "year of the Threequel churned off an assembly line" in 2007.

Its going to be a good month indeed. I'm not that keen on Wolverine because the last X-Men movie blew chunks that could take out a cow at 50 paces, but ST and T are going to be good stuff.

Having seen it myself growing up and agree NX, that it seems to be Everytown, U.S.A.

I'm trying to remember who I knew in high school that liked Star Trek. Off hand, a couple were smart AP types who were also in band, but they played sports too (not football or baseball, more like track and tennis). I guess they were part of the "smart people" circle, but were far from being social outcasts. Another wasn't a popular jock either, but his partying and womanizing ways was far from the nerd stereotype.

I guess there was only one who fell into the stereotype -- loud, glasses, lettered in debate, but he didn't give a damn what anyone thought of him.
