I think they missed the perfect opportunity to recast a Young Picard who would take over the role, but Synth Picard is as much Picard as the Harry Kim who ended Voyager was the same guy who began the journey.
I've always seen the Duplicate Harry as a stupid thing to come up with, in fact another act from Berman and his gang to make poor Harry look stupid.
Picard was even worse. It was .......... disgusting! Talk about character destruction!
Picard being a robot is funny as fuck, as is Worf becoming a "pacifist" and immediately (literally within ten seconds of his introduction) killing more people than he did in all of TNG.
But for handling for legacy characters, nothing comes close to Icheb's fate. It's astonishing. It's so bad that it loops around to being exquisite.
I really hope they get to make one more series and it's just every possible legacy Star Trek character being kicked so hard in the groin that it's fatal. No plot, just every possible character you can think of, from major ones like Kirk and Picard to oneshot characters like Matt Decker to the most minor characters imaginable, like the woman with no dialogue who sat next to Beata in "Angel One", all lined up in a room without explanation, and all receiving a lethal blow to the crotch. Even ones who have no crotches aren't spared. Armus and the Horta both getting kicked in wherever their genitals are.
The destruction of Kes in that episode and the destruction of Garak in the book Second Self was ten time worse.
And I didn't like how a great character like Gowron was treated either in the episode Dogs Of War. First they made him look like a fool and then they killed him of, the best Klingon ever in Star Trek.

As for a new series, I want a totally new crew and a likeable one in a series with good storytelling, no recasted characters.

It's dull because it's a network procedural, it's a paint by numbers network show that's filled with every old cliche they can cram into it.

I find most of these "network procedurals" much better tjhan today's streaming adapted crap.
And I prefer cliches instead of doom and gloom, character destruction, blod-splattering and torture scenes.
Was it? Seems like the obvious hardship that would come from being a lone ship trying to make it home was immediately abandoned for "anomaly of the week" type episodes. It tried so very hard to be The Next Generation, it forgot to try and be itself.
I can agree that some of the premise for the show was abandoned.
But it still managed quite fine until season 4 when it became a three-character show.
For the life of me, I'll never understanding how a Voyager fan can look at the characters of Enterprise, or even Discovery, and call them boring.
VOY had great characters, unfortunately some of them were used badly. ENT was dull and had dull characters, maybe except of Trip Tucker.
In your opinion. In my opinion, those three characters are about the most bland and boring characters in the entire franchise, with Chakotay only being saved by a great performance in Prodigy.
I see nothing bland and boring with these characters. OK, Harry was badly handled by those in charge but Kes and Chakotay were great.
It really is remarkable what Beltran could do with the character, given a fair chance.

"Gross violation" of company rules could easily be changed to "misuse of a good idea" when it comes to Star Trek.
The PRO writers, unlike Berman and Braga, actually wanted us to care about Chakotay.
And they actually did a good job.
I just wish that they had brought Kes back in a decent way too.
Anyway, I know I've been a bit pessimistic in my previous post before this one today and I apologize to those who have read it.
But I'm pessimistic because I've had a pessimistic day even in the Gray Universe and the forsaken part of it where I live so I'm in a pessimistic mode and wish that someone would play something pessimistic for me.
Even more sad is that I'm starting to realize that it's no longer a matter about
if I will abandon Star Trek but about
when I will do it.
The sad thing is that it's nowhere to go.
When I finally abandoned VOY back in 2001 after being insulted by the worst episode ever made, there were always other interesting things to keep an eye on.
There were still hope for a new better Star Trek show and there were the Star Trek books whic at that time had some really intersting, readable stuff.
There were also Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, CSI. Then came NCIS and the CSI spinoffs. Plus some other series and shows here and there.
The situation is worse today because I find it very hard to find something to like and enjoy.
So Star trek will leave a big empty hole if or when I decide to abandon it.
Fortunately I still have TOS, TNG, DS9 and early VOY to watch and the good Star trek books to read!
