Conclusion: Same old ratio, nothing's changed.

Kick Ass has been the only real highlight for me so far. Summer has been very poor. I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim, but it wasn't anything that special imho. Looking forward to HP7, I think they've reached the most 'film' like book, so my expectations are sky high.

So "Kick Ass" is pretty good? I'm thinking about watching it.

I loved it, it was the funniest new film I'd seen in a long time. A lot of that comes from the 'unexpected' parts of it, so I suspect it will lose something on rewatch, but I'm still intending to buy the DVD.

A lot of them have been pretty poor or just a disapointment. I would rank my top 3, based purely on a personal enjoyment factor, as-
1. Kick Ass
2. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
3. Resident Evil: Afterlife

I've seen Kick-Ass 3 times at the cinema and although I plan on buying it at some point, but 3 was kinda enough.
I've seen Scott Pilgrim 4 times and I would see it again if anyone asked, so I think Scott Pilgrim makes it as my favourite film of the year. I've been to cinema about 57 times so far this year but my highlights would be:

Four Lions
Toy Story 3
and maybe one or two other's that aren't coming to mind at the minute.

Not so much an estimation as an "I've seen 46 films some multiple times" I think it's 11 multiple viewings so 57.

Although he wouldn't agree on this part the move I'm most interested in this year is HP7, and that's largely because of its position in a series and the draw of the familiar.

That's why I went to see HP6... and I do wish that I could feel jazzed enough about HP7 to see it, but the book just sucked too damn hard, and I haven't any desire to see Watson cuddle up to Grint.

The same could be said of Toy Story 3, I don't think I'd have gone to see a kids film about living toys if 1 and 2 hadn't done the groundwork already.

Do you not think we're just suffering the effects of the writer's strike? Films can be in development for a long time, so we had the films that were already in production then rushed out after the writers strike and now we're suffering the badly written, quickly commissioned and greenlighted films that had to be made to make sure they had something this year?

Agreed. I've been wondering about that myself, and am glad you caught it.

Or has this been a pretty crappy year for movies? There's been hardly anything that's interested me enough to see in the theater. I see trailer after trailer for movies that just leave me thinking "who cares?" It's a pretty sad state of affairs when someone asks me "What's the best movie you've gone to see this year?" and I have to honestly reply "Hot Tub Time Machine."

Kick Ass, and Machete were both great fun.

I might check it out. All the new releases are free on our on Demand this week for cable company employees. They're trying to work some bugs out of it or something, and they want us to report any problems. That was kind of the impetus for this thread. I couldn't find one damned thing that I was interested in watching, aside from an interesting documentary about Mormons and gays.
