Is it just me?

Actual movies in theaters? I've seen:

The Book of Eli
Clash of the Titans (2010)
The Edge of Darkness
The Expendables
Green Zone
Inception
Iron Man 2
Jonah Hex
Knight and Day
The Killers
The Last Airbender
Oceans
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Total thus far: 13
Worth Watching: 8
Worth picking up on DVD: 4

Conclusion: Same old ratio, nothing's changed.

Kick Ass has been the only real highlight for me so far. Summer has been very poor. I enjoyed Scott Pilgrim, but it wasn't anything that special imho. Looking forward to HP7, I think they've reached the most 'film' like book, so my expectations are sky high.
So "Kick Ass" is pretty good? I'm thinking about watching it.

I loved it, it was the funniest new film I'd seen in a long time. A lot of that comes from the 'unexpected' parts of it, so I suspect it will lose something on rewatch, but I'm still intending to buy the DVD.

I've seen 21 films at the cinema so far this year (I'm not gonna include Avatar SE as its still a 2009 film)

The Road
Book of Eli
Sherlock Holmes
Daybreakers
Wolfman
Crazy Heart
The Crazies
Green Zone
Shutter Island
Clash of the Titans
Kick-Ass
Iron Man 2
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Hot Tub Time Machine
Four Lions
Predators
Inception
The Expendables
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
The Last Exorcism
Resident Evil: Afterlife

(I know Sherlock Holmes is also a 2009 film, but I didn't see it till January)

A lot of them have been pretty poor or just a disapointment. I would rank my top 3, based purely on a personal enjoyment factor, as-
1. Kick Ass
2. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
3. Resident Evil: Afterlife

I've seen Kick-Ass 3 times at the cinema and although I plan on buying it at some point, but 3 was kinda enough.
I've seen Scott Pilgrim 4 times and I would see it again if anyone asked, so I think Scott Pilgrim makes it as my favourite film of the year. I've been to cinema about 57 times so far this year but my highlights would be:
Scott Pilgrim
Kick-Ass
Four Lions
Toy Story 3
and maybe one or two other's that aren't coming to mind at the minute.

Although he wouldn't agree on this part  the move I'm most interested in this year is HP7, and that's largely because of its position in a series and the draw of the familiar.
That's why I went to see HP6... ;) and I do wish that I could feel jazzed enough about HP7 to see it, but the book just sucked too damn hard, and I haven't any desire to see Watson cuddle up to Grint.

The same could be said of Toy Story 3, I don't think I'd have gone to see a kids film about living toys if 1 and 2 hadn't done the groundwork already.
Bingo. :techman:

Do you not think we're just suffering the effects of the writer's strike? Films can be in development for a long time, so we had the films that were already in production then rushed out after the writers strike and now we're suffering the badly written, quickly commissioned and greenlighted films that had to be made to make sure they had something this year?
Agreed. I've been wondering about that myself, and am glad you caught it. :)

Or has this been a pretty crappy year for movies? There's been hardly anything that's interested me enough to see in the theater. I see trailer after trailer for movies that just leave me thinking "who cares?" It's a pretty sad state of affairs when someone asks me "What's the best movie you've gone to see this year?" and I have to honestly reply "Hot Tub Time Machine."
Kick Ass, and Machete were both great fun.

So far this year I've seen:

Daybreakers
Book of Eli
From Paris with Love
The Wolfman
Percy Jackson
Shutter Island
The Crazies
Alice in Wonderland
Hot Tub Time Machine
How to Train Your Dragon
Clash of the Titans
The Losers
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Iron Man 2
Robin Hood
Prince of Persia
The A-Team
Toy Story 3
The Last Air Bender
Predators
Inception
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Eat, Pray, Love
Scott Pilgrim
The Expendables
The Last Exorcism
Piranha 3D

Of that list I'd count only The Expendables and The Last Air Bender as dogs. 17 I either already own, or will get on Blu-ray. This year hasn't been particularly bad, it's just that the peaks haven't been especially high. Lots of average in there.

So far this year I've seen:

1. Daybreakers
2. Sherlock Holmes
3. The Book of Eli
4, Up in the Air
5. Toy Story 2 3D
6. Avatar
7. The Road
8. The Princess & The Frog
9. Wolfman
10. Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief
11. The Lovely Bones
12. Solomon Kane
13. Edge of Darkness
14. Alice in Wonderland (Twice)
15. The Crazies
16. Shutter Island
17. Kick Ass (Three times)
18. How to Train Your Dragon
19. Clash of the Titans
20. The Ghost
21. Ponyo
22. Iron Man 2
23. Four Lions
24. Nightmare on Elm Street
25. Prince of Persia
26. 4,3,2,1
27. Shrek Forever After (twice)
28. Get Him To The Greek
29. Predators
30. Inception (Three times)
31. Toy Story 3 ( twice)
32. The A Team (twice)
33. The Karate Kid
34. Knight & Day
35. The Last Airbender
36. Cats & Dogs 2
37. Tinkerbell 3
38. Marmarduke
39. Salt
40. The Expendables
41. The Sorcerer's Apprentice
42. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World (4 times)
43. Grown Ups (twice)
44. The Switch.

From that list ones I would have given 4 or 5 out of 5 would be: Sherlock Holmes, Toy Story 2 3D, Princess & The Frog, Shutter Island, Kick Ass, Iron Man 2, Four Lions, Inception, Toy Story 3, A-Team, and Scott Pilgrim.

This year has been pretty good, I think.

*Kick-Ass
*The Karate Kid
*Looking forward to Let Me In
*Looking forward to Tron: Legacy

Wasn't too impressed with Inception (too much hype for what it was)...and, of course, I didn't care for Resident Evil: Afterlife; and Avatar's story didn't seem that great.

So, I haven't been overwhelmed yet, but they save the good stuff for December.

It's been a pretty so-so summer (Inception and Toy Story 3 being stand-outs), but I'm in wait and see mode when it comes to the Oscar bait. The Social Network looks promising, for one.

I might check it out. All the new releases are free on our on Demand this week for cable company employees. They're trying to work some bugs out of it or something, and they want us to report any problems. That was kind of the impetus for this thread. I couldn't find one damned thing that I was interested in watching, aside from an interesting documentary about Mormons and gays.
