Is Discovery your new favorite Star Trek series?

Seth MacFarlane is capable of taking things seriously? Learn something new every day, I guess.

Most of it is mildly engaging, moderately entertaining, extremely light and forgettable sci-fi fare. The crude humor is not at all a constant barrage, but it's distracting and make the show feel uneven and the characters seem like unprofessional, unsupervised second shift welders as opposed to academy-graduate space explorers.

Many of the stories are derivative, and almost immediately forgettable. But they are fun while you watch them. The cast is cool. It's a good show but it's nothing at all that will generate passion or debate (except seemingly from the endless comparisons made with DSC) like Trek does for me. Good "have it on in the background while you do something else" stuff I guess.

You probably didn't notice it because you were blinded by a myriad of lens flares. I however did notice it. The camera is shaking in almost every scene as if filmed by an amateur or a person with trembling hands. Terrible.

It's a common aspect of contemporary movie and TV production, to give an almost "documentary" feel of authenticity and dynamism, even in non-action scenes such as conversations.

The best of Star Trek Discovery, has not come close to the Best of TNG, VOY, DS9, ENT sadly. But its early days, and feedback we are all sharing, may yet shape the future of the show. Early seasons of modern trek, took a while to gel, and find their voice.

The original Trek has been my favorite t.v. show since about 1970-71 and it always will be. Discovery is already looking to be my second favorite Trek as I'm far more interested and invested in it than at the same point for all of the other spin-offs. In fact eight episodes in for the other spin-off's and I thought they were all shit. TNG and DS9 thankfully got better, sadly VOY and ENT never did, though they had a bright spot here and there.

You're basing everything off the pilot. I need to do that with TOS. What is with that screaming pointy ear guy and why does he liked blue plants so much? Why didn't they even give a name to that cold emotionless female first officer? A transparent dome on the top of a spaceship!?

You forgot the ship becoming transparent when it goes to warp.

And the sunroof.

The time barrier's been broken!!

Not even close...

DS9 & TNG flip the top spot all the time on my list and then ENT & Voyager flip the 3rd/4th spot depending on my mood.

At the bottom is TOS, which is a product of its time and as a child of the 90's, there is so much about the show that makes it a struggle to watch. I do like the characters and the movies that followed especially TWOK, TVH & TUC + the 3 Nu TOS Trek movies are great.

Discovery has yet to convince me it's even worthy of the Star Trek name because at times it's a solid show and then other times I feel like its borrowing Trek name for nothing more than brand recognition.

No.

TOS is, and probably always will be my favourite Trek series, together with TNG. They usually duke it out for the 1st place, and I think TNG might actually be the better show overall, but TOS was my "first love" on television and usually gets the edge simply based on my feelings about it.

That being said: DIS is not bad.
I'd put it right into the pile together with ENT, VOY and DS9, which IMO are all about at a comparable level of quality (although in vastly different areas individually). So far, DIS is probably at the bottom of the pile, simply because there doesn't exist very much of it yet, and there hasn't been a "WHAM!"-episode that blew me away yet. That being said, the characters are very promising, and for me already a firm part of the overall Trek lore, and I'm sure the show will get better over time, as all Trek series did. Being together in the pile with all the other spin-off Trek shows is not bad, it's already an achievement to be proud of!

For me it's:

TOS
TNG/DS9
VOY
ENT

STD

And I have a hard time even including STD in the ranking because it still doesn't feel like Star Trek to me.

Finished re-watching the first eight episodes with my dad and am confirming Discovery's position in the top spot for me. It's actually managed to dethrone DS9, which is frankly kind of amazing because DS9 didn't become my favorite until "The Maquis"

Seen em all. 3rd grade came home from school (3rd grade?) to watch the original series. IMO, this new one blows them all out of the water including Star Wars and Stargate franchises. Very impressed with the acting, music and plotlines. Yeah, I'm a fan.
