I’m 54 and I voted for Season 3. Why? The memberberries, while enjoyable to me, were only a secondary consideration. There really is only one main reason I prefer S3. Two words: Liam Shaw.

Cue mic drop.

It's hilarious the amount of projection in this thread. I'm well known in these parts for not liking SNW (and DISCOVERY for that matter!), but it's not like I haunt the SNW subforum on a daily basis and flood it with buzzwords. Just think, soon we'll all be able to train AIs to go back and forth to argue on our behalf a la "A Taste of Armageddon".

There is a decent amount of new material about the behind the scenes of PICARD out there. Anyone buy "The Art and Making" of the series from Titan books? How does what's written there compare with what Patrick Stewart has in his book?

Apparently there was a STLV panel on what went wrong with PS2. Did anyone go? Is it up on YouTube or as a podcast?

Michael Chabon apparently did a lot of fan conversation about PS1 on Instagram. Is that collected and analyzed somewhere? For all intents and purposes at some point James Duff was set up to be the showrunner for season 1. Has that even been looked into?

Back in the day, half of the conversation during the Berman era was speculating on the behind the scenes mechanizations. The Toronto based productions seem practically like a black box, while despite the PICARD seasons differences, each has had a lot come out in fits and starts.

Shaw is a one-note character who spends much of his screen time being objectionable at best, downright offensive at worst. I don’t see the appeal at all.
He put Picard in his place.

He was a captain who took care of his crew first and tried to prevent Picard's and Rikers dangerous shenanigans.

Plus he liked Malbec.

Anyone remember that time when a whole bunch of PIC fans were driven from the forum by a howling mob of people who weren’t so hot on S03?

No?

Yeah, me neither, because it didn’t happen.
I know what happened.

This is a discussion forum. Both sides can be discussed. If you want a place to gush and not be able to defend your opinions or listen to criticism, I’m sure there are other places to talk about Picard.

Having said that, I prefer season one and am critical of season three. That doesn’t mean that both don’t have their ups and downs.

I think Todd Stashwick gave a great performance with the help of writers who knew what his strengths are.

But the trouble with Shaw was that the biggest unresolved mystery of the season was "How the hell did he become a captain?" closely followed by "How the hell did he stay a captain?" With so many other commanders sharing his bridge, Picard, Riker, Seven etc. he was always going to have to be different somehow, but the character we got should've never left engineering.

This.

I find Season 3 right smack in the middle. It's good in places, bad in other places, and stupid in still other places

I think I'll start a thread on that.

Federation is in constant conflicts. Can’t afford to throw people away.

Plus, look at Ron Tracey in TOS. No way did all of those emotional problems just start up after he lost his crew to the Omega IV virus. He wasn't playing with a full deck before their arrival in orbit if he's that unhinged by the time Kirk and the Enterprise arrive.

In Starfleet you either go nuts or get promoted and become evil.

Omega Glory makes a fairly solid case that Tracey shouldn't have been a captain either! Though he at least did a pretty good job of playing the role until the mask dropped.

The thing about all those crazy captains, corrupt commodores and bad admirals in Trek history is that there's either something that made them snap, they're walking to Hell down a path of good intentions, or they hide their dark side. Shaw doesn't even pretend to be a good captain.
