International release?

TrekCore has an article with statements from Mike McMahan about the international distribution of Lower Decks. The short version: He can't say anything official, but they're working on it. I'm not quite sure I understand how the pandemic is to blame for this, but at least he's not staying silent on it anymore.

Sounds like the pandemic moved Lower Decks up a couple of months in the US (possibly swapping with Discovery) but the international partners are still on the old timetable, so it'll be a couple of month delay for those outside the US and Canada.

Because Discovery was slated to go first but was delayed. So then LDS became the series closer to actual completion, but still behind the timetable for international negotiation.

Interestingly, the article on Trekcore has a quote from CBSAA to the effect it had more trailer views than any other CBSAA show so far.

They need to translate everything and have local voice actors for all major languages, that'll take some time
Of course I can't speak for all viewers, but I couldn't care less about the dubbed version of Lower Decks. I wish they would just release it concurrently and add the dubbed versions later. I suspect that half of the gags will be lost in translation anyway.

A little birdy told me the deal is close guys. I also know who. Just be patient.
It's hard to be patient when the show premiers tomorrow. I know international viewers have been spoilt the last couple of years, but this situation with Lower Decks is a real let-down. Most mainstream viewers won't care or notice, but as a fan to watch it weeks or months later is just disappointing.

Sure, many people prefer the original, but it could be a requirement for regional release. In Germany, only the big theaters have some additional OV slots, they mostly show the dubbed versions of movies. On TV, everything is dubbed. Computer games are also dubbed, but often you can choose a language when you install them.

Business timescales don't work on fan timescales sadly...or pandemic ones.

^ I do understand all that and I know this is a luxury problem. Still, I would have thought after a couple of years of producing and distributing content for international streaming services the whole thing would have become a little smoother for all parties involved. But yeah, the pandemic seems to have thwarted all plans. I don't really blame anyone for this, but I am disappointed.

Yeah, I know only too well. I am German. Although I would say there has been a noticeable shift especially among genre-savvy viewers who prefer the original versions. On streaming platforms it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to keep everyone waiting until a dubbed version is ready. But yeah, German mainstream viewers would likely be alienated if they started showing the original versions on broadcast television.

I wonder if they may end up doing what happened with Short Treks, and have it all appear before S3 of DIS.

Netflix Germany released some English language content during the last few months without other languages available yet, including German, stating this was to protect their voice actors.

I agree with most of you, I'm feeling a little let down. I read this board, twitter, Trek websites, watch trailers etc., I was riding the Trek wave of excitement (uhm, yes) and now I'm forced to sit at the beach, wait, and drink water. It's annoying and it does have impact on my level of excimtment. (Hint: it's not increasing.)
That being said, I'm pretty sure there is a good reason for the delay.

Does anyone know if screensharing (like on Zoom, Discord) is legal if the service allows multiple streams anyway (like Netflix allows up to 4 and CBSAA allows 2 at the same time)?

Please let's not get into this here. Contact CBS All Access, they might give you an answer. I know you mean well, but I'd rather not have this discussion here. :)

So it looks like in Australia, 10 All Access is going to be “rebranded” in Jan 2021 thanks to their CBS merger. Lower Decks will be included, as well as Picard once it’s filled it’s contract requirements with Amazon. Don’t know if this means we will have to wait til January or if another broadcaster will air it in the meantime, but yeah :sigh:

Anything more on when this Lower Decks might be getting an international release?
Unfortunately not. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for an announcement on Trekmovie.com, Trekcore.com, startrek.com, Mike McMahan's twitter, John van Citter's twitter, as well as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix on twitter. I wonder what's taking them so long to at least announce something.
