International release?

If they’re holding it back for when they launch CBSAA in Europe and elsewhere (which is perfectly understandable, let’s be honest), they should come out and say so. Be transparent with the fans.

This isn’t the Short Treks situation, where they weren’t in control of the release of them (Netflix was), so far they are the only ones in control of LD’s distribution [that we are aware of], so they’d be better served long term by being open with the fans who have been pestering them for information.

I feel they’re shooting themselves in the foot by releasing in the States but nowhere else. I’m not hugely excited about this show as I am for DSC season three, but I’m still looking forward to giving it a shot. The lack of news on an international release is puzzling. I wonder if it will just silently drop on Netflix the day of release? Do Netflix always announce its upcoming releases in advance?

Quite annoyed at the lack of an international release, surely someone knows something?

I don’t think so. Especially with what’s happening in the world now, the might decide to go online-only with physical releases and only do MOD through Amazon.
You do realize DVD and Blu-ray releases are still happening during the pandemic, even for streaming productions, right? In fact, the Short Treks physical media released was announced and released during the pandemic.

I do realize that. However if it comes more profitable to go MOD, they’ll go MOD. Also there are less and less TV shows getting released on traditional DVD and Blu-Ray.

Not sure if this has been posted, but there was this frustratingly cryptic tweet from McMahan himself.

Make of it what you will.
Very interesting! That's at least something after all the silence. Thanks for the heads-up! Let's hope we find out soon if he's right.

I think we have a while to go before a Star Trek show is in danger of not getting a physical media release. At the moment, I'd say the only real danger is Lower Decks might just get a DVD release and not a Blu-ray, since that is a popular trend at the moment. But event that I'm not willing to bet the farm on.

Hmm, I wonder then if I was right and we’ll wake up to find it on Netflix one morning? If that is the case it’s strange no one has bothered with advance promo.

I just saw this and was running over to post. You’re good.

Luckily I have CBSAA but I do hope that they announce SOMETHING before the launch Thursday........just odd to wait so late.

Any Blu-ray will also probably be region free so if they say only release it on DVD in the UK cause reasons importing one from elsewhere will be an option.

I'd be surprised if the makers of Lower Decks are privy to international distribution details. It won't be in their department. They probably know just as much as the public does.

Also isn't the Star Trek CBS All Access content on YouTube normally geolocked so that only US viewers can see them? In the UK I can watch both the trailer and first look Lower Decks videos just fine without doing anything (SDCC 2020 video works too). Just to make sure all the Discovery and Picard stuff still gives me the "Video unavailable" message.

McMahan is an executive producer and the showrunner of Lower Decks. If the show isn't a success, it falls squarely on his shoulders. He has a vested interest in making sure it is successful internationally, and while he is the primary creative force behind the series, he most certainly is in the loop on where his audience is going to be located.
