Interesting Ideas on FTL Travel

Threads of substance have been a bit rare lately, so more leeway seems to be the order of the day to keep some fresh content going.

The best thread ever was way back in the early Noughties when a few scientists had a debate about the likelihood of other intelligent life in the galaxy in a manner that everyone reading it could understand.

Well hot damn, I'll say one thing for you guys -- when you disagree with somebody's opinions, you don't just stare at your toes while you blush and shuffle the dust.

I admire you for that. The members of my own message board (click on my screen-name for the link) tend to be a bit timid when faced with somebody who doesn't quite get the idea that a message board is a place for conversations -- not lectures.

In all fairness, I'm closer to the long-winded type than to the more considerate folks who know when to hush up. But I try to make up for it with a little alleged humor and a few pictures when they're appropriate to the subject.

Like the ones below. I don't know if this thing will ever work, but it's absolutely gorgeous! :techman:

The first picture contains a link to the article about it. The article opens with this intriguing statement:
__________________________________________

Dr. Harold "Sonny" White is still working on a warp drive at NASA's Johnson Space Center. His work is still in the experimental stage but that doesn't mean he can't imagine what the real life Enterprise ship would look like according to his math.

Further down in the article I found these delightful statements about Dr. White's research.

If his work is successful, he says that we would be able to create an engine that will get us to Alpha Centauri "in two weeks as measured by clocks here on Earth."

The time will be the same in the spaceship and on Earth, he claims, and there will not be "tidal forces inside the bubble, no undue issues, and the proper acceleration is zero.

When you turn the field on, everybody doesn't go slamming against the bulkhead, which would be a very short and sad trip."

Yeah, you're a bit behind the curve on the IXV there. We had threads galore pop up when the "NASA's warpship" stuff started hitting the press. The artist, Tobias Richtor, posts in the fan art forum occasionally.

That's all right-- I missed it the first time around. And it is gorgeous.

We do tend to shoot down those who ramble on about nothing scientific (and/or leave no room for other ideas). But I'd rather not alienate anyone who comes here looking for an honest discussion. As long as they don't mind a little give and take.

Heaven knows I'm no expert on much of anything, so I try not to push my opinions too hard. I just like to call other people on it when they can't back up theirs.

'Impossible' Space Engine May Actually Work, NASA Test Suggests

http://www.space.com/26713-impossible-space-engine-nasa-test.html

"Test results indicate that the RF [radio frequency] resonant cavity thruster design, which is unique as an electric propulsion device, is producing a force that is not attributable to any classical electromagnetic phenomenon and, therefore, is potentially demonstrating an interaction with the quantum vacuum virtual plasma,"

http://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=20140006052

Good news as this engine is operating on particles that seem to come and go into and out of existence.

The thruster may work by somehow harnessing the subatomic particles that continuously pop into and out of existence.

These particle would be part of what Star Trek Fans know as sub-space. If the same particle can be used for thrust then they might also be used to send a transmission through space in the sub-space realm.

A space inheriting all characteristics of a parent space.

Virtual Particle - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_particle

In physics, a virtual particle is a transient fluctuation that exhibits many of the characteristics of an ordinary particle, but that exists for a limited time.

The Virtual Particle exhibits many of the characteristics of an ordinary particle....

Now before the Big Bang the particles that are present now would not have been present prior to the Big Bang except for the Virtual Particle that for some reason comes into being and then exits.

The longer the virtual particle exists, the closer its
characteristics come to those of ordinary particles. Virtual Particles would had to have been around prior to the Big Bang because the Virtual Particle would not have split from the regular particles to become Virtual Particles because the Virtual Particle comes into being and the longer it exists the more characteristics it exhibits to normal particles. Normal particles don't come into existence and then become like other particles the longer the particle remains in existence but the normal particle will remain the same particle for the entirety of its existence before becoming non-existent. Normal particle do not produce particles that come and go in reality which means they reside in normal space unlike the Virtual Particle that comes into existence and then inherits all of the characteristics of a parent space just like the Virtual Particle does with normal particles thus making Virtual Particles part of sub-space based upon the definition of sub-space.

Sub Space - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subspace - A space inheriting all characteristics of a parent space. Does the Virtual Particle not come from a space where the particles inherit all of the characteristics of a particle in normal or the parent space?

The first measure of understanding physics is to first understand basic vocabulary and what words mean.

Going to school and taking course in math and physics would be a better way to understand physics than chattering in inchoate claims about physics and cosmological processes backed up by cutting and pasting wiki articles.

...and where does everyone else's creditability come from? All I ever see anyone posting is negativity about topics that are not covered in what you read that has already been discovered or what you see on t.v.

So what is everyone elses physics background without lying and trying to make yourself believe that you are educated in physics.

NO LIES....now do tell.

Lost in Moria...that is not a place of physics education but comes from the Lord of the Rings.

The more that you lie to yourself the more delusional you become.
