The Unexplored Guinan/Q Backstory

Maybe the lines in Picard can be written off as El-Aurian propaganda. All that was actually shown was that Guinan had a method to summon a Q. All this talk about El-Auria fighting the Q to a stalemate could've just been El-Aurian propaganda that even Guinan might not be aware is exaggerated information.

Guinan's TNG "hand gesture" at Q might actually just be superstitious El-Aurian nonsense that actually has no effect on Q, not unlike "rain dances" or primitive rituals by ancient cultures that practitioners genuinely believe had an effect, when in reality Q isn't even threatened.

Maybe she specifically wasn’t your typical El-Aurian, other El-Aurian abilities aside. “True Q” situation?

When we first have Guinan and Q meet in "Q Who?," we get hints of an interesting backstory between them. They know each other and have some sort of history together, it is implied that Guinan has some method of defending herself against Q, and Q even suggests that she previously went by a different name.

However, pretty much all of that was never followed up on, and other writers/producers took the characters, particularly Guinan, in a different direction with regards to backstory.

Does anyone have any idea, though, what Maurice Hurley's original ideas were with regards to Guinan and her backstory with Q when he wrote that episode?

maybe it was deliberate? preserve her mystique? Keep things close to the chest?

I mean they probably could have written a Guinan episode in TNG if they wanted to...

The El-Aurians were assimilated by the Borg but apparently per Picard they were powerful enough to fight the Q to a truce.

Oh I think that’s kind of silly—I always took Q and Guinan’s backstory to be one between Q and Guinan, quirky-mysterious-fun figures both, not some political thing between their entire species.

I wish Hurley had gotten to tell what was clearly the seed of a more interesting story.

I think this is one of those things where wondering what might have happened is almost always going to be better than what anyone could ever write.
