In the Pale Moonlight

Danoz

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I just finished this episode. I dare say it has to be one of my favorite Star Trek episodes of all time, because there's something very real about it... something very, Machiavellian that always reaffirms my judgment that Sisko is truly one of the best captains in all of Trek lore. He was able to set aside his conscience for the good the alpha quadrant and not get caught up in Federation dogma and self-loathing. Employing Garak to deceive the Romulans was the best decision he made in the entire war effort.

It will always be one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek. The whole thing feels very 'real', and I love the angles on Sisko when he narrates.

One of my favorite episodes of Trek (it's in my top ten for all of Trek actually). I think that the way it diverges from the established formula really helps it.

I particularly enjoy the way that Garak gets to show us just how good he is at what he does. It's hinted at in other episodes, but when you watch it back for the second or third time, you can almost pinpoint the moment that Garak dreams up the entire plan through Andrew J. Robinson's outstanding acting.

If the sixth season wasn't so outstanding, I'd pinpoint In The Pale Moonlight as my favorite episode of the lot. It is certainly one of the best episodes of the series. Almost a film noir feel, with Sisko's after the fact narration and his fate, which is at once both entirely his doing and yet entirely out of his control.

Definitely the very best Trek episode ever made and also IMO the finest hour (or 44 minutes or whatnot) of TV drama ever produced (although when I made a thread about that idea on this board some months ago, no one seemed to agree :cardie:...but I maintain my opinion that it is anyhow :techman:).

Good but Avery kind of overacted.

Edit: WTF? I wrote black guy. I meant Avery. My mum will kill me.

Watching it again this evening, I got the feeling that Dax somehow knew Sisko was up to something. She might not have knows the specifics, but when she said "If ever we could use a new ally, it's right now" I had the feeling she was pointing at Sisko to proceed.

Anybody who says DS9 betrays the Star Trek name should watch this episode and see that the moral and ethical conflicts Sisko faces is exactly what Roddenberry created Star Trek for back in the 60's.

It's the naturalism of it - the plotline is structured to be the perfect slippery-slope - there's no one point where you can say, "okay that's where Sisko should have stopped." Yet he ends up where he does, without us really seeing how it could have turned out any other way.
