I'm watching NEMESIS on AMC... The photo of young Jean Luc

Yeah they should have photoshopped some hair onto Picard in that photo to keep it in line with Tapestry and Violations but it isn't a big deal really. So a balding guy shaves his head, what of it? I see it all the time.

I'd like to see someone here photoshop some hair and the right uniform on that screencap

Of course, at no time does the movie actually claim that the person in the photograph is young Jean-Luc Picard...

Perhaps seeing Shinzon reminded Picard of this bald bloke he once knew, an enlisted fellow whose life Picard and Crusher closely followed for one reason or another?

"For just the price of one cup of raktajino a day, you can support a needy Starfleet Academy student. You'll receive letters and photos detailing the impact your contribution has had on this student's life..."

I could swear the guy playing young Picard/Needy Starfleet Cadet in that photo is just Tom Hardy in Academy duds. So what was all that in the dinner scene trying to explain away how Stewart's and Hardy's lips/nose/jawline/everything don't match?

...And just think what could have been. With just a couple of rewrite sessions, all the ingredients of an epic would have been there. The "evil twin" motif is not automatic ruination to a story, and certainly this particular twin could have been given quite a few unique characteristics. Instead, the writers concentrate on making up excuses for the weakly motivated existence of the twin.

In the end, it all hinges on the writers having no clue of what to do with the Shinzon character. This clown, sorry, clone was created for a purpose - to replace Picard. Why isn't there any effort to make use of this purpose, then?

Timo Saloniemi

Indeed. Nemesis is nothing but lost opportunities. To further what Biggles said, it's mental masturbation on the level of a mouse in a mouse wheel.

But by using an abbreviation, it also obscures it's meaning. Hence why Kentucky Fried Chicken became KFC when they no longer wanted to emphasize the "fried" part.

It's a little counterintuitive, but so are abbreviations to begin with.

If Shinzon had been a fully-aged clone, many of the movie's failings would have been rectified. Picard vs. Evil Picard with both played by Stewart could have been gold.

The photo was a total botch job all around. Apart from the baldness, they also put Picard in the TWOK-era uniform of an enlisted man.

Isn't that a TWOK-era cadet uniform? I thought the cadets wore that outfit in that film as the Enterprise was a training ship?
That's the uniform worn by enlisted men in TWOK-GEN. Wearing the uniform with a black turtleneck means you're an enlisted man. Wearing the red collar signifies that you're a trainee. (Cadets are officers in training, and as we saw with Saavik and a few others, they wore the officer's uniform but with red for the department color.)

Yeah, unless the Romulans suck ass at cloning and genetic engineering, Shinzon should have turned into Patrick Stewart as his aging began to accelerate. Instead, we get Tom Hardy with vericose veins stenciled on his skull.

I was just discussing this issue with a friend the other day (he having also watched the film on AMC). If the uniform had had a red collar, I'd have almost let them get away with it. But yeah, I think that the officers' uniform with red trim/turtleneck probably would have been more correct. Unfortunately many sources over the years have referred to the jumpsuit as being the 'cadet uniform', and I guess it's kind of stuck. If only they'd consulted Bob Fletcher (who had worked all these details out very extensively)...

Hey, at least they got the uniform right for the era.

Maybe we can get George Lucas to go in and re-Anakin that picture with a still from "Tapestry" or something...

Here's a quick-and-dirty job that might make it a little more palatable, if not quite 100% correct (someone with better photoshop skills and/or more time and energy to devote to it could surely do better).

But Saavik wasn't a cadet. She was a commissioned officer of Lieutenant rank already.

Apparently, the red collar when worn with the jumpsuit denotes at least enlisted trainee. The full uniform with commissioned officer rank pins and red collar seems to denote some sort of a postgraduate student, perhaps a command school student. We don't know what a "cadet" (that is, somebody studying to be officer rather than enlisted, at least by today's parlance) would wear, but we do know that there were cadets in the ST2 mix because our heroes said so. So probably enlisted trainees and officer cadets both wear the jumpsuit with red.

It is also possible that red with officer uniform may be worn by instructors, I guess. Nothing outright necessitates this interpretation, though. Saavik and her friends, and later Valeris, could have been postgraduate students of various sorts.

Great job with the photoshop, ElScoob!

It's still the enlisted uniform, but nice job. Love the hair. :techman:

Honestly, it really makes him look more like Picard.
