If TOS Was Made Today...

If it isn't, that would really burn you, wouldn't it?
No. But it'll be a truly sad comment on how low the franchise has sunk. This film is certainly one of the worst things ever to come out of the franchise.

Of course. because it it does last its not an indication that you were wrong, but that everyone else still is. Nice.
I'm reminded of the lone guy in the room who hasn't smoked what everyone else is smoking. At least i won't have a hangover in the morning...and fewer regrets.

Or maybe you just have different tastes than other people. It's not that big of a deal. IDIC, remember?

I'll be a bitter man who wishes he'd spent more time defending the dignity and integrity of a 40 year old television show to people who enjoyed a changed version of it that I did not approve of, comparing those people to pot smokers and never moving past it.

That would be a life well spent.

We all have different tastes. My current view is that the 2009 movie is just one of an infinite number of parallel universes to the Prime One.

The writers of the film also share this view, well that is it's a different universe after Nero started causing trouble.

So, the choice is made. Denying reality, hm?
First of all it's fiction. Secondly viewing these things as different continuities and alternate/parallel universes makes more sense than trying to force fit things together that don't fit together.

And thirdly, it's fiction, just the same as Winnie the Pooh, Donald Duck, and Sir John Falstaff. Alternate universes and debates over canon are fine but at the end of the day, it's nothing more than a story told around the campfire.

TOS made today would be very different. Why? Timing. Star Trek, the original series, was ground breaking for its day. It also had a very unique combination of people behind it. Many of those people aren't around any longer. There's also the matter of innovation in effects and breaking social boundaries. When you're in a relatively immature arena, you're forced to improvise and be more creative on technique. TOS today wouldn't have those challenges. There's also the different social climate to contend with.

So, even beyond TOS being different if made today, would it be good? That's way too subjective a question and has far too many dependencies that would influence it. Thus, I can't comment. Who really can? It's pointless.

In the final analysis, TOS was a great milestone in episodic Sci-Fi TV. It will always be remembered for that. Are later Star Trek incarnations better? Well, that really depends upon the person. In essence, they're definitely different. Each have their own unique characteristics linked to their place in the timeline. Some of us will prefer one over the other, for personal reasons. But that doesn't mean other people are wrong in having a differing opinion. That said, it really amazes me how some folks will totally bash another Star Trek incarnation... even when they haven't even seen it. I think it more mature to say "I simply didn't care for it", than to say "it's the worst thing ever made in the Star Trek franchise."

So... three cheers for TOS. May it continue to stay alive as a wonderful milestone in Star Trek history. No matter who decides to reinvent it later on. ;)

Geez, you guys are vicious. There is a difference between vigorous debate with playful bantering, and outright hostility. Warped 9 makes some excellent points, as do many of the other posts.
I can just imagine if Trek were made today. There would be a left-wing cause of the week that is blatant, rather than thinly veiled. The Savage Curtain would feature JFK rather than Abraham Lincoln. The captain would be an anorexic woman who goes around beating up men every week. At least one of the bridge crew would be gay. Thoughtful and creative plots and dialogue would be replaced with endless, mindless action scenes with plenty of explosions. The Enterprise would be run on solar power. There would be lots of cursing.
Every work of art is a product of time it is produced. It cannot help but be influenced by that time in history. Trek was a product of the 60's, with its inherant sensibilities. Abrams's Trek, if it can be called Trek, is a product of the early 21st century. Society today is much more shallow and has a far shorter attention span than it did in the 60's. There has to be a fight or an explosion in every scene or they lose interest. Abram's Trek reflects that. He loves Star Wars, and it shows. (Science Fantasy and Science Fiction don't really blend all that well). People have become less tolerant of anyone with an opposing view. They seem to take things personally.
