If TOS Was Made Today...

It'd feature charismatic leads, gratuitous eye candy, ambitious but inconsistent writing, and draw on themes that dominated popular culture.

Sounds kind of familiar to me.

If they made Star Trek today it might be like a slightly more serious Stargate SG-1.
Which would be a major step up from ST09.

Yeah, they made said film...well, they got the gratuitous eye candy anyway.

Guess what late 1960s television show also fits that description? :)

For you, yes. For those who are capable of adapting with the rest of the world and not clinging to an obsolete yesterday, no.
Just watch how fast ST09 gets obsolete.

It won't be faster than TOS ;).
It'll be obsolete in about ten years or less. TOS hung in for a lot longer than ten years. Setting aside production design and standards a lot of TOS is still good storytelling. ST09 will be essentially a flash in the pan.

Time will tell, and TOS only lasted three seasons initially. I suppose you think anything modern, like District 9, will also be obsolete in a few years too hm?

To really answer this question, it seems we must imagine one of two worlds.

1. Where TOS already existed and where people were making it again. If so, the last film is our example of what TOS would look like on the big screen.

2. Where TOS hadn't existed and it, therefore, would be going around "for the first time today." If that were the case, however, we would have to imagine our modern world without the pop cultural influences of Star Trek - part of what is possible today is possible because of the influence of the original series.

We can't really answer question 2, and we already have our answer to question 1.

Bingo!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I wonder if there was no original TOS to inspire a new one made today, would the ship designs be radically different?

But it remained popular for decades after. I suspect District 9 will age better than ST09. For one thing it's a much better film and actually has something to say.

Yes we get it you don't like the film, but you don't have to drag it into EVERY discussion that DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR OPINION OF THE MOVIE!

My point about TOS lasting AND my point about ST09 not lasting were questioned. So I responded to it. You don't like the answer then too damned bad.

There's a whole goddamned forum devoted to those who are absolutely orgasmic over Abrams' flick. And so if someone outside of that forum mentions they don't like the thing then so what?

I like TOS, warts and all, and I don't have to defend it. If I think that it'll outlast anything Abrams can vomit up then so fucking what?

If all you want to hear is fawning praise for ST09 then stay in that forum.

If it isn't, that would really burn you, wouldn't it?

Your obsession and investment in things that you have absolutely no control over nor input into is staggering. Pulling these predictions from your ass as if they aren't just wishful hopeful thinking... about something as trivial as a movie, no less... while accusing others of being "sorry ass individuals"... who on earth are you trying to fool?

Here's another bit of reality: Outside of the usual suspects such as yourself, Star Trek was "obsolete" a good while ago in every way that matters. Was it good? Sure. Were a dozen other shows from the same period? Sure. Are any of them still relevant outside of their respective gated fan communities? Nah. That you insist on clinging to it and defending it like it's your firstborn child doesn't change any of that.

Star Trek doesn't love you back. Other than that, carry on banging the drum, and have a great day. :)

^^ If you don't want me raining on your parade then don't read my posts. You can't stand me and I can't stand you either. So at least we understand each other.

And why hang around here if you have such a low opinion of TOS?
