If Discovery is a bust...

I think it's unlikely to totally fail, it'll probably get at least two or three years, but even if it just fails to meet expectations there will be a five to ten year break then finally an Academy film or series (feeling that the characters are most exciting and likeable at the start of their careers).

Less than decade I think. It's too big a property to lie fallow that long.

Possibly. Personally I don't think that's a good thing really, since Trek really hasn't been given a chance to rest and come back with fresh ideas and style.

If Discovery is bust, I doubt that we will see a new Star Trek series again in the future. Because, the fans won't life forever. In just 10 years for now, the number of people who care about Star Trek will be reduced. The old will die, many will move on. And because there is no successful Star Trek that can get younger audiences attention, there won't be new hardcore fans that care about this franchise.

So in the future, when we grow old, and some of us die, Star Trek will be put into the sleeve forever. Unless this franchise can attract a new generation of audiences out there and spark their interest in this franchise.

So I think Star Trek has to be able to attract a new generation of fans. Because young people has different taste to the old fans like us. So in order to survive, Star Trek must evolve. They have become a show that can spark the interest of the young people.

As the older generation of fans, we can only support the franchise so they can survive today. Let the franchise get new fans - young people who can outlast our life and support this franchise into the future. And in order to do that, we have to let the franchise to evolve.

If Discovery fails tptb can thank the stupid format that they decided to use to bring Star Trek back to tv.

I for one won’t be paying to watch Discovery and a bunch of crappy CBS sitcoms every month.

Is there a willingness to let it evolve? That's the question that I'm constantly wondering.

If Discovery fails, CBS will wait a few years and try it again. Because, this is Hollywood, and reboots and the like are kind of the safest bet right now.

I would say that if Discovery is a bust, that's it for Star Trek. An aging fan population and old aging tv-shows/movies (or the new action movies) will not be enough to keep Star Trek alive.

Agreed. If I know Hollywood, there is nothing that they won't reboot. NOTHING.
Exactly. Since it is a property they already own, and is a know quantity, they will be more willing to invest some money in to rebooting it, rather than trying to develop their own version of "The Expanse" or something like that.

It's impossible to know right now what it would take for Discovery to be considered a "bust" by CBS. Who knows what their expectations are for subscribers to CBS All Access, a poorly thought out service with so many obvious drawbacks. If viewership is not what they expected, I imagine they would rethink All Access before canceling Discovery, a show (and franchise) in which they have so much invested. Maybe we'd see an output deal with Netflix in the U.S. In other words, if no one watches the show, CBS will (and should) blame the distribution channel rather than the show itself.

...but if William Shatner had a cameo you'd shell out fifty bucks a month.

If it fails to meet it's audience numbers expectations it likely will be pulled after a half dozen episodes (if that).

ABC sank a boat load of money into "When We Rise" and promoted the hell out of it. After a handful of episodes it's already looking like it will be canceled.

The old day of give it a few seasons and see what happens are long behind us.

Acknowledge you made mistakes, and hopefully learn from them.

There are many franchise that has been dead today. For example, Buck Rogers. Right now, Star Trek still has a lot of fans. So their interest can spark the studio to make a new Star Trek. But we must aware that it is a time bomb. When the number of people who interest with this franchise decrease, they will put it to the shelf forever; and Star Trek 's fate will be like other Dead Franchises. They will be forgotten.

I think now is a very critical time for Star Trek to survive. So let them make it, for the newer generation of fans. Don't destroy it just because we don't like.

I highly doubt that it will just be forgotten. The cultural touchstone that is Star Trek is something that still has some sway, even in younger crowds. It may not garner the rapt attention that Marvel or Star Wars or Transformers, but there is still a draw.

Secondly, studios are more inclined to invest money in something they think is sure to make money back or in a property that they already own. Warner Brothers has already announced plans to reboot the Matrix. The Power Rangers movie is about to come out. Hollywood has long demonstrated that it is more than willing to revisit the well of ideas in order to come up with a product to sell.

Will it be as popular as it was before? Maybe. It just takes the right production team with a desire to do something new with the product to possibly catch the public's eye once more. And, if not, well, CBS has shown no interest in slowing down merchandising.

Hardly forgotten.

By todays standards, TOS got incredible ratings, but that was back when there were only three main choices.
