I still...cry

I hate this ep.

No, just kidding, of course not! I think this has to be easily in my top 5 TNG episodes. Fantastic performances, well-written and directed, and like others, I love these ones with some real emotion on the time. So much of the time (esp. TNG) Trek characters weren't allowed to show real emotion (e.g. Geordi learns his mum's probably dead) but "The Offspring" and "Family" show just how great it can turn out.

An A+++ episode easily!

Yep...and it seems like a no brainer, you would think. You have to care about characters if you want to watch a show for 7+years. More of those kinds of episodes would have been great...but even then, they did have a few good ones..Inner Light..Off Spring chief among them...Sarek too

RobertScorpio, I couldn't agree more.
It's the only Trek episode that makes me tear up every time. It was very skillfully crafted... and remarkably sad.

When I showed it to my wife the first time, after we got married, I had to hide the fact that I was tearing up...but thankfully she started bawling, so I had time to cover up!!!

Someone should make a list of TNG 'cry moments'

This would figure highly.

I got the same emotion in Tuvix when the guy realizes they're going to make him 'die'
He goes from trying to be stoic to just lossing it.

Definitely one of the top tearjerkers in all ST. Someone should make a list of the top tearjerker eps in all the shows. In addition to this ep, the others that would make the list are City on the Edge of Forever, Requiem for Methusaleh (TOS); The Inner Light, Half A Life (TNG); The Visitor, Far Beyond the Stars (DSN); Tuvix (VOY); and the ENT ep where Trip's clone sacrifices himself (sorry don't remember the ep title).

Back to The Offspring. I really got a kick out of the fact that Data let his child pick its sex and appearance, and that two of them were aliens (Klingon male, Andorian female). It certainly looked odd when it was gender-neutral.

I also like when Picard urges Data to refuse Haftel's order. "Stand your ground, Mr. Data." Then when he admonishes the admiral, "Turn a child over to the state?" He is appalled.

You have something there Mr. Ranger...paramount ought to release a CHIC EPISODES collection..heck, I would but it if it included some of the better 'emotinal' episodes you mentioned...

For me, the scene that really makes me cry, every time, in TNG, is the scene in "Sarek", where Picard is overcome with Sarek's emotions, and he yells out how much he loves Spock... for me, that just does it, every time.

I don't remember this episode. I saw it but that was years and years ago and now I don't remember and can never seem to catch it when it's on...

At it's best, TNG was better than Televison ever deserved.

For 6 out of 7 years TV Guide put it at the top of the list for shows the Emmys ignored.

For me, when his wife reappears in The Inner Light and when Sisko realizes what Jake has done in The Visitor I lose it. Far Beyond the Stars tears me up too. However, the one odd moment that puts a lump in my throat-when Gul Dukat picks up the baseball and realizes that it's a private message from Sisko that he'll be back-that gets me. The Offspring is also a real moving episode.

Just watched "Offspring" a couple months ago, and it makes me cry; also, I always cry when Troi's "Child" dies...

I saw it the other night. I agree, it's so sad! I did almost cry

There are some other teary moments in TREKDOME that get to me...

Spock and the blond babe falling out of love on the Spores episode...Sisko's final scene with old-jake in VISITOR....the episode with Voyager's DOC and his holodeck family....just to name a few...

I like how Data adds her memory chip to his own (so to speak) and says something very similar to what people say in the real world, how, if we remember them, they havent really died. Its a beautiful episode.

I love this episode too.

On a lighter note though, since Data incorporates her memory chip into his own, that means he knows exactly what it feels like to plant a HUGE kiss on Riker

I'll tell you if I was on that ship, I'd gotten Riker and Worf together and met that Admiral in the hallway and beaten the daylights outta him. Nobody messes with our family, especially sweet Data!

Definitely in my top 10 TNG episodes. I am pretty much crying from when Lal starts having her emotional breakdown, and by the time she says "I love you father. Thank you for my life." I cannot even see the TV screen due to the tears in my eyes.

The only other TNG episode that makes me cry with absolute consistency is The Inner Light - on two occasions. First is when Picard has his epiphany and says: "oh it's me isn't it?!? I'M the one it sets out to find".

The second moment is right at the end when he picks up the ressican flute and clutches it tightly to his chest.

This is the only episode I haven't seen. I keep trying to catch it on the T.V but it's always on when i'm on holiday or somthing. I really want to see it.
Man, what a last episode to have waiting for you! Talk about saving one of the best for last!

One of the little trivia bits that I love about this episode - Hallie Todd later played Lizzie McGuire's mother. I remember seeing her name in the credits and saying to myself - "That's Lal!" :D
