I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th...

The biggest problem with Enterprise is the dull, functional dialogue that just keeps the basic plot going. No one has interesting ideas or thoughts. Stuff just happens.

I dunno, there was Hoshi's character building moment of not liking the direction the stars went outside her cabin window. Then the whole episode devoted to finding out what Reed's favorite cake was...
Yeahnevermind.

Enterprise did at least attempt to correct some of Voyagers more glaring flaws. One thing they did was to try and keep a reasonably consistent crew of background characters. Unlike Voyager which would appear to have a total crew compliment of just over 12,000. Either that or Janeway was somehow replicating Gold Shirts using stolen Vidian tech. Enterprise at least kept the background faces somewhat consistent. They tended to pay more attention to who they brutally and horribly killed off. Similarly things like damage to the ship actually didn't get reset every week. They paid attention to the little details.

This would have been fantastic, if they weren't still using a pile of rejected TNG scripts for the first two seasons. No really, is there a huge room somewhere at Paramount filled with nothing but unfilmed TNG scripts that they must deplete before they are allowed to try anything new? "No dessert till you eat all your Brussels sprouts!" Enterprise really highlights the biggest flaw with Rick Bergman in charge. He never really had any vision to the shows beyond "keep doing what Gene would have done... only without anything sexy anymore!" At least for Enterprise they stopped dressing everybody in burlap or pajamas and finally developed some fashion sense in the wardrobe Department. (I really wish to know who in the TNG era insisted that every non Starfleet character must wear upholstery?)

I've only seen Enterprise once, and after the combined 21 seasons of the 24th century shows, so my impression pretty much reflects what others have said here, it wasn't really that bad as much as it seemed bland, uninspired and more of the same old, same old.

I'm really struggling to remember any specific episodes. Most of the first two seasons are a blur, I remember the arc of the 3rd season, but not any individual episodes. The only ones I remember with some clarity are from Season 4. And the velcro one.

Since I haven't really watched that much Star Trek over the past 10 years or so I've been meaning to rewatch it for a while now with a fresh pair of eyes, but just haven't found the time as I'm barely managing to keep up with the currently produced shows I'm watching. There's just been so much good TV in recent years and with Discovery looming round the corner I think it's gonna have to wait a little while longer...

I am waiting for Netflix to pick it up to rewatch it for the first time since it's original release.

That will also be the first time I watch it in proper HD.
Back in the day I had to get the episodes through... creative means.

Good old 128k connection was "fun".

The Suliban will be recurring,.
As for familiar aliens, you won't have to wait that long.
Just wait till you get to the P'Jem episode!
A species you haven't seen for a while will make a comeback there (as will an awesome actor in his 4th Trek role I believe?)
Throughout the season you will also see a few other alpha quadrant species and possibly not only from alpha.
How much do you know already? So we don't have to unnecessarily tapdance around spoilers? :)

About half the episodes in the first two seasons are good, most of the rest are bland with a few bad ones. But season 3 and 4 are some of the best seasons of Star Trek and each take the show in a fresh new direction.

I remember seasons 1 and 2 being slapped-together contrived action-adventure, where they just seemed to be aiming to get more episodes out. It was product TV rather than SF. I imagine they were relieved whenever they came up with another story that was just barely worth filming. Got another one in the can... No mission.

As an aside I recommend watching the Blu-ray behind the scenes interviews (particularly the ones that were filmed for the BRs and not copied from the DVDs). They are very candid and shed a lot of light on network interference in the creative process and the difficulty the producers had finding a core group of writers in the first couple seasons. Probably a third of the episodes in the first season were written by new writers who didn't work out.

My biggest fear is that the prequel setting and pop country music is just a window dressing for what's going to be more TNG/VOY stories.
I'm afraid that's mostly what you'll get at first, although there are a few gems in those early seasons that use familiar races. And in later seasons the show does actually try new things and remember it's a prequel.

(by the way, is more TNG/VOY really such a bad thing?)

Vulcans in this episode seemed to be less evolved compared to someone like Tuvok, less cold and more condescending
That's my take on the Vulcans of this series.

Did the actor who played Admiral Forrest seem familiar to you?

What's your opinion of Porthos? I don't think a main character had ever had a pet onboard a ship before except for Data's cat Spot.

Just watched the first episode of ENT, Broken Bow (sorry, @Griffeytrek, I'm stubborn ).

I liked it I guess. The main plot with the Klingon and the Sulibans (is that how you spell it?) didn't interest me all that much. But I liked what I saw with a few of the characters and it was fun seeing them on their first mission together. Trip and T'Pol were cool, the latter was particularly interesting as she and the other Vulcans in this episode seemed to be less evolved compared to someone like Tuvok, less cold and more condescending. Scott Bakula's the new captain and lead of ENT, he also showed potential. The rest of the characters didn't really do much, and I'm already getting Harry Kim vibes with Ensign Mayweather, but the main three in this episode had good chemistry together. Who says we need an ensemble!?

That theme song though? I'd heard some bad things about it... but sheesh, that was corny. So out-of-place. And the decontamination strip/rub-down scene with Trip and T'Pol made me feel like a sellout for even watching it. That was the biggest load of BS I've seen since Seven put on the catsuit (Jolene Blalock is incredibly hot though, I can't lie ).

I kind of wish we got to see more familiar races in this first episode rather than so much of the "Suliban", whoever they may be. I just went through seven seasons of seeing new and utterly forgettable alien races, I don't fancy having to put up with more of 'em. We're back in the Alpha Quadrant, let's go see a few familiar species for a bit!

It's a pretty good start. I wish the ending had a little more hook to it other than "more adventures". I don't want four seasons of episodic space adventures to far-off alien planets, let's do something new and interesting here. But, yeah, I enjoyed it for the most part.

Mayweather wishes he had all the interest and attention that Harry Kim gets. Janeway wouldn't even be bothered to beat him. Let's put it this way. You know that scene you just watched in Broken Bow with Mayweather sitting in the Gravity "Sweet Spot"? That's pretty much it for his character development. Right there, that scene. "I wuz a space trucker don'cha'know". That's all there is. Chakotay gets more love and attention... and better lines.

For what it's worth they do flesh out the Vulcan's a great deal as they go forward. Some good, some bad. But Jolene Blalock does actually surprise. (She turns out to be one of the stronger Trek actresses giving some really good performances in the role. Didn't see that one coming.) And Gary Graham is great as a recurring character throughout. Enterprise is at its best when they are giving us those pre-quel backstories. It's at its worst when it tries to be yet another Star Trek ship show doing the same old same old funny headed alien of the week with an anomaly stories. You really just have to make it through season 2. Season 3 and 4 go all in on the newer approach to things and actually get really good... (except for These are the voyages, there is no forgiving that mess.)

Speaking of the Sweet Spot.
They chickened out on that... what with family viewing requirements and all.
You can bet on Netflix they would have called it the Zero G-spot, or g-spot for short!

I don't remember him giving me any flashbacks to anyone.
Well he usually played an alien. He was the Romulan scientist who the Voyager crew met in the first season in Eye of the Needle. You know where they found a tiny wormhole that led to the Alpha Quadrant but was 20 years out of time. He played the Klingon scientist who old Janeway stole the time travel tech. from in the Voyager finale Endgame. And he played one of the 3 ex-Borg they ran across in the season 6 episode Survival Instinct. I'm not sure if he played any characters in DS9 or not. But it seemed like he was one that the producers liked to use a lot.

This is true.

It's at its worst when it tries to be yet another Star Trek ship show doing the same old same old funny headed alien of the week with an anomaly stories.
False. A good story is a good story. Shuttlepod One, Dear Doctor, Dead Stop, Cogenitor... all excellent and none are 'prequel' episodes.

I like dogs, therefore I like Porthos. He's just a pet really, not much to like or dislike (unless they start writing stories about a dog on-board a starship).

Quiet! Don't let them hear you! It might give them ideas!... oh damit they heard you. Know look what you've done! That poor little Doggie, having to travel the universe with Archer... what a horrible fate.
