I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th...

They're my favorite parts of Voyager. I've been a big Robert Picardo fan since I was a kid, I grew up on Joe Dante movies and he was in quite a few. He was awesome/hilarious in Innerspace. I've always liked the idea that Paris MIGHT be Locarno from TNG: The First Duty. I know technically he isn't and McNeill himself says they're different characters, I think they just didn't want to get sued.

The story is that they wanted to use Locarno, but the lawyers told them they'd have to pay the writer of The First Duty royalties for the whole run of Voyager. So they decided having Locarno wasn't important enough to spend the money, and just changed the character's name.

Or they didn't want to pay money to the writer(s) of 'The First Duty' for using a character they had created.

I know, I'm aware of the story behind how they wanted to use Locarno but would have to pay royalties to the writers for every episode the character would appear in (most of them), and how they used Locarno as the "basis" for Paris. So much so that they weren't satisfied with any other actor's ability to capture the spirit of the character that they just brought McNeill back to read. But once they'd done it, created a character that was so similar to Locarno with very minor differences, I would think a lawsuit was a possibility. Since they weren't going to pay those royalties. Because some of the denials seem a little silly to me. Like saying Locarno was irredeemable for doing pretty much the same thing Paris did. They're not going to openly admit they sort of lifted the character, that could be used against them to press for those royalties or at least make them look like they cheated the writers in the court of public opinion.

@Shalashaska ,You will probably like the way the 2 characters play off each other in later seasons. A bit of a snarky friendship.

Sometimes I think the writers forget that Paris and Locarno are supposed to be different people. Evidence: what B'Elanna said to Tom in Drive.

I suspect the reason is budgetary they have the TNG uniforms for extras etc.. to use. In universe, could be a transition phase, a choice of uniforms etc..

TNG uniforms were used as the more formal variant.
On board a starship it was at a captain's discretion which uniform was required.
Picard relaxed his rules after All Good Things gave him a new perspective on things and left the choice to his officers.
Janeway was a fan of the DS9 informal unis from the word go.
At least that's how I rationalize it.

Why does DS9 keep dressing starship personnel in the TNG uniforms?

Generations and VOY show that the DS9 uniforms had started to be used on starships like the Enterprise and the Voyager, yet DS9 keeps showing Starfleet officers wearing the old TNG uniforms outside of the station in episodes like Homefront and Paradise Lost.

It just seems like they're giving themselves more work than its worth.
I don't think there is any consistency of usage between Voyager, DS9 and the movies. In DS9, the two uniforms are used to symbolically denote closer association with central Starfleet affairs.

There's a bit of inconsistency there. But for Homefront and Paradise Lost, the DS9 overalls represent work or field Uniforms. The TNG uniforms are used to represent the more business like uniforming. Much like an actual Military there are differing uniforms for different purposes. You wear fatigues or work gear out in the field. You wear a shirt and tie in command offices or the Pentagon, and you wear full formal dress uniforms when required for ceremony. The standard DS9 uniform is work gear. Something you roll up your sleeves and get dirty in.

And yeah, don't use Generations as the baseline for how Starfleet uniforms work. Down that road lies madness.

Bald Sisko is best Sisko.

There's such a stark difference between the first three seasons of DS9 and season 4. So much pay off for all that character establishment and world building. It's just good episode after good episode one after another and I'm loving it.

The metaphorical balls have dropped.

Season 4 is fantastic. Also remarkable for how spread out the goodness is. Season 5 starts a little slower with most of the really awesome stuff backloaded in the season. The front half has your largest remaining block of more or less random episode of the week type stuff. Some good stuff in there. Some average. The back half is where the really good stuff ramps up and continues into Season 6. We weren't kidding when we said each DS9 season is better than the prior.

You are only just starting to see Bald Sisco. Bald Sisco only gets more and more badass from here. Bald Sisco is not Picard. Bald Sisco is not a wishy washy diplomat. Bald Sisco gets shit done. NOW! And then he ups the badassery again!

When you do get to season 5 of DS9, be on the look-out for an episode that is a very nice homage to the original series.

Have you watched First Contact yet or are you waiting for the release date to coincide with DS9's airdates? If you haven't there's no need to hold off, you know the only little bits of information you need to know already. I'm interested to hear your take on it, though given something you previously said in this thread about certain types of Trek stories I fear you might not like it.

I'm glad you're enjoying DS9 so much, and I'm definitely intrigued about what you think of VOY.

I already watched TOS and TNG on American Netflix this year, but my router-redirector stopped working. Then, UK Netflix actually have the series on now, so I suddenly started DS9. Even though I only watched it a couple of years ago, and I told myself I wouldn't watch it again.

A total Trek overdose this year I think. :D

I'm particularly curious to hear your unfiltered, uncorrupted raw views of Voyager. We snarky old folks made our decisions years ago. Plus we know DS9 is awesome. We're just thrilled to experience it new through you. But for Voyager and Enterprise this changes. We want you to tell us where you find the good in them. We jaded old assholes occasionally need a kick in the head to appreciate something properly.

Oh gods... somewhere in there we have to talk about Insurrection! Mommy I dontwanna!!!

I enjoyed watching it to a point when I was younger, but I never liked it as much as DS9 or TNG. There is a lot of good stuff in there, but also a lot of middling episodes. Watered down TNG is a good description.

But, years later, after originally being disappointed in it, I can just see it for what it was. I'll enjoy the highs and, erm, enjoy the lows in one way or another. :D

I am planning to rewatch it when I finish DS9.

To be honest, I'm not digging Voyager. It's not terrible, I just don't find it very engaging. Season two has been pretty abysmal so far and I'm just ten episodes in. The characters, not interesting, nothing there to feel attached to (well, to be fair, I do like The Doctor, but that's it), the ship feels and looks good as new despite being attacked multiple times in multiple episodes, it feels like a watered-down TNG.

It's mediocre. I just wish there was a good episode here and there to keep me going but nothing has stood out so far.

wait for season 4, my young friend
