I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th...

Also I can't remember how you have been handling 2 partners split as season Enders? In this case I would suggest that if you do opt to watch Scorpion part 1 and 2 back to back, go one episode further to The Gift....

An interesting thing to do would be to watch the Babylon 5 episode "Mind War" just before watching "The Gift." It's like deja-vu all over again.

In a certain way I'm having the same discussions with my sister as what's going on here. For her 30th birthday, I bought her all 7 seasons of TNG (on bluray and I still watch them on DVD). I didn't have to suggest the gift, she hoped for it...

There are a lot of parellels with Babylon 5. Up to and including the two episodes Shala just watched. Favor the Bold and Sacrifice of Angels. When they were making the B5 pilot the producers asked, "what is the biggest space battle ever made for TV?" Which at the time was Best of Both Worlds. With maybe a dozen ships shown, mostly derelicts. So their goal was to top that. And the friendly rivalry had the B5 and DS9 crews trying to one up each other for number of ships on screen etc for years. Sacrifice of Angels was the result of that brinksmanship.

Um.

Wow.

I'm going to need a little more time than I thought to write this all out. If that's even possible.

You are far enough in that you have met most of the new recurring characters. As you see Martok is back. You may or may not be surprised to know this, but more often than not when fans are polled for "Favorite Klingon" Martok wins. J. G. Hertzler is just amazing. You have also had the chance to meet Admiral Ross. Cherish this character. This is perhaps the only serving Admiral we ever meet in Star Trek that is not Crazy, Evil or an Absolute Bastard. (actually the later guy from Enterprise wasn't too crazy.) Barry Jenner was a delight in the role and played so well against Avery Brooks. Sadly he only just passed away a week or two ago. The third new recurring character you probably haven't met yet. He is Vic Fontaine. We will talk about him later.

Oh and believe it or not, Sacrifice of Angels is NOT the seasons high point. Yeah, you are not watching Voyager at the moment.

Admiral Nechayev wasn't too bad either though. It's a shame we never got to see more of her than we did. I did love Admiral Ross though. R.I.P. Barry Jenner.

Yeah, I was going to say Admiral Forrest. Actually, Harv Bennett's character was decent too (it helps that Harv himself was pretty likable).
The guy who told Kirk that Enterprise had to be scrapped is debatable. ;)

I guess there is no love for William Sadler.

I'm thinking "ex Captain" Decker would probably postulate "Admiral" Kirk fully belongs in the Bastard category. Admiral McCoy is likely a self admitted nasty old Bastard. Necheyev is nasty duplicitous and possibly evil. Although she does not complete the trifecta and does appear to be sane.

He's more recurring antagonist than supporting or recurring DS9 cast. Worth discussing in his own right. But I just don't mentally place him in the same category.

He's a very good actor. I wish they had used him a bit more. And I don't think falling into Bashir's obvious trap is an end worthy of the Machiavellian Sloan. It's like his IQ dropped a few tens of points!!!

I see what you are saying, but even the few episodes that featured Sloan and Section 31 had a tremendous impact on the franchise as a whole. The concept of Section 31 was strong enough to be used in Enterprise, allowing it to survive the Kelvin [STRIKE]silliness[/STRIKE] incident. And it was intriguing enough for Orci to hitch his scripts to it. I would like to think that Sadler's performance has something to do with the endurance of Section 31. Imagine if he had been a foil for Picard.

One thing I love about the Dominion is how they're never shown to be vulnerable. Compare it with the Borg. After three Borg episodes in TNG, they started to lose their charm with First Contact. We're, what, twenty Dominion episodes into DS9 and I still feel like they're the best villains this franchise has had, I still feel like the Federation has no real chance against these guys.

Yep, there is no sleep button for the Dominion. There are all those moments where Sisko or someone else thinks that they can take out a key resource to bring the war to a quick conclusion, but the war turns out to be a long slog (like many real wars).

Is this the best Star Trek I've seen on television up until now? Possibly. All-in-all, expectations have been exceeded.
There are as many as five episodes left in DS9 that are potentially better, but the the episode between For the Cause and Sacrifice of Angels make up what I believe to be the franchise's best run.

Well, the Dominion has its vulnerabilities, but we only learn them much later in the series.
