I like Ezri, but...

I misread the title of this post. I thought this was about Ezri's butt. There simply is not enough data points to have a solid opinion. I will point out that in many of her scenes, Ezri is standing up or walking. Even when sitting, seldom is she seen by the waist down.

This may imply that Ezri does not have a butt, or more importantly, not a butt as we know it. It is not as clear cut as the age old philosophical argument of "Does Neelix have a Groin" or even "Can Odo hit a three pointer just by stretching his arms all the way to the rim and is that legal?"

But getting a bit more serious, and I think more importantly, we have a character in Ezri who is not defined by her butt or lack thereof, nor by any shallow criticism of the body, but more importantly by her hair, which is of course both practical and fantastic. I think season 7 could have focused a bit more on Dax coming to terms with new hair and how that affected those around her and her ancient selves, their feelings of envy, sadness, and discomfort.

Dax is effectively a slug, and doesn't care what kind of plumbing its host has. Why would it care how much hair?

Also, no one in Star Trek has a functioning butt. I mean, no one even pees until "First Contact". And despite the events of the Voyager caption contest, no one passes gas. And despite Worf's fondness for prune juice... look, that doesn't happen either.

Ezri's hair evolves throughout season seven, changing as Ezri settles in to becoming the new person that she is. It's subtle sometimes, you have to read between the lines...but she even changes the side she parts her hair on eventually, signifying that the transformation is complete.

That's why introducing Ezri when they did was a bad idea. That or ending Ds9 after 7 seasons... TNG and VOY were foundering by their 7th seasons, but DS9 could have gone eight. Sisko returns, Bajor joins the Federation, Ezri is able to adjust to her infusion of eight new personalities over time... Weyoun 9 shows up.

Hmm. Wouldn't Weyoun have gone back to serve the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant? Why would he come back?

- Try to persuade the Federation and other allied powers to allow the Female Changeling to be released?

- Negotiate passage through the wormhole for previously contracted tulaberry wine shipments?

- The Great Link blames him for the loss of the war and exiled him. And what better place for exiles than DS9?

Yup.

The O'Briens do ok, as does Sisko and Kassidy but on the whole I prefer less romance in my Trek.
I agree with you here. The O'Briens and Sisko-Kassidy were actually good. Normal relationships with good chemistry between those involved.

I have nothing against romance in Trek but if it has to be there, then in must be good and realistic, just not only for the sake of romance in a series.

It isn't necessary to pair of each and every character in every series. In many cases it just don't work.

I didn't like the producers' decision to shack Ezri up with Bashir; I thought it felt forced and not natural. Can't a character on DS9 be independent and career driven without the romance drivel?

Shouldn't Riker have taken his own ship and continued his rocket powered ascent through Starfleet's ranks?

If the character is popular, a pretext will be made for their continued presence.

And boring. When I saw them kissing in a turbo lift, my thought was "good, they got that stupid thing over with".

Quark, maybe. I think his last romance was in Season 2.

I thought Ezri-Bashir was cute as an end-of-series thing. I reserve opinion as to whether I thought it would last very long or whether it was something I would have wanted to see more of.

If it's really that important to have a character that didn't get it on: Nog.
He did go on a double date with Jake though.

And if you're counting non-regulars like Nog, there are heaps more no-romance characters on DS9. And six of them are Jeffrey Combs! Weyoun 4, Weyoun 5, Weyoun 6, Weyoun 7, Weyoun 8, Brunt. ;)

The Weyouns don't count. Vorta and Jem Hadar apparently don't do romance or sex at all.
