I Have Begun the Journey

Just switched over to Netflix from Hulu now that they're offering Season 8 in HD. It looks SO good compared to previous seasons.

I just jumped on this forum b/c I'm wanting to start watching the various Star Trek tv series, but just noticed the Stargate forum.

I'm also looking to jump into SG-1. A friend of mine tried to get me into Stargate a few years ago but I just never got arond to it. Now that practically every season is on Netflix Instant Streaming, I think I'm going to dive into SG-1 Season 1 along side watching TOS of Star Trek.

I do have a question for Stargate fans. Does SG-1, Atlantis and Universe all follow the whole individual episode/procedural type format or do any of the shows become serialized at any point?

Never really watched Atlantis but SG-1 usually followed a lose over-arching story. Each episode was mostly independent, but sometimes they would connect. It was pretty common for a plot point in one episode to appear again later on down the road. Overall, it had a pretty good sense of internal continuity. I guess the best way is to say that it was serialized, but not heavily so.

SG-U was sort of the same from what I recall. Its a little too soon to tell how that show is going to turn out.

SG-1 and Atlantis are pretty procedural, but they do have arcs and what not throughout the show. SGU is serialized, but not in a good way. It basically drags things out and wastes its potential by either not doing anything with established plot elements or doing random ass things that have little to no connection to what has happened in the series.

New Order Part I [A]
New Order Part II [A]
Lockdown
Zero Hour [A]
Icon [F]

Avatar Surprisingly good.
Affinity [B-] Two Teal'c eps in a row?
Covenant Couldn't stop thinking about The Nanny
Sacrifices [D] booooooring

Endgame [C]

I've never been a fan of the NID or anything related to them. There are maybe one or two episodes that worked for me. Most of the time, I think it comes across as a hokey X-Files episode. I realize that Stargate is more Earthbound than Star Trek and other shows, but I always just think the writers are being lazy when they bring in the NID. I much prefer episodes with offworld enemies rather than government conspiracies. They should have left that to the X-Files.

Oh... Mallozzi and Mullie wrote this one. They're awful. It's like they're riding a job for eternity on the basis of Window of Opportunity.

I think Season 8 is a huge step down from Season 7. It seems like the budget has been greatly reduced.

"Prometheus Unbound" - [C] - Well, not that good. I love Claudia Black, but I don't really like her in this role.

"Gemini" - [B-] Not bad, but nothing really memorable either.

"It's Good to Be King" - [D] - Well, they really turned Maybourne into a weird sympathetic / pathetic person didn't they. I never really liked his character. I hope this is the last of him.

"Full Alert" - [F] - I just hate NID / X-Files type episodes. Garbage.

"Citizen Joe" - [A] - I bet everybody hates this one, but I think it's one of the best clip shows I've ever seen. I was very interested to see how Joe's life played out.

"Reckoning, Parts I & II" [A]

"Threads" [A]

"Moebius, Parts I & II" [A]

All these episodes have kind of blurred together since I watched them all last night, but I loved all of them. I just really wish they hadn't have killed off Jacob Carter. He was always one of my favorite characters. I've already been missing Dr. Frasier for a while.

Oooh... this reminds me.

Avalon, I & II [A] Surprisingly, I'm really liking all the new characters. It's a breath of fresh air. I think they really could have handled O'Neill leaving a little better though. Where did he go? What's he doing exactly?

Origin Really liking the Ori storyline.

The Ties That Bind Four episodes and they're still basically telling the same story? This might be the most episodes gone without some weird little side story.

The Powers That Be [B-] Kind of humorous, although it feels like it's been done before.

I thoroughly enjoy Season 9 and 10. I enjoy the characters and Ori story. Plus, the scene with Vala being burned alive is fucking intense!

I've begun the journey, too! I started watching SG-1 on Netflix last week, and I'm watching the penultimate episode of Season One now. :techman:

The first few episodes were pretty weak, but I thought the second half was a lot stronger. I'll probably start Season Two tomorrow.

And I enjoyed Season Nine and (what I saw of) Season Ten, too. Though I kind of wish they had made it a genuine spinoff instead of a continuation.

Really? I thought the switch to those HD digital cameras made the show look really cheap compared to the 35mm film that they had been using.

I'm doing the journey in a messed up reverse order. Watched SG-U, and liked it, so checked out Atlantis. Burned through all of that in about a month, and am now starting SG-1, about 8 episodes into the first season there so far...

Sucks to be jumping back in time so far, though, and I've (for now) left the HD world behind. :(
