I don't understand the hate Disco gets / still gets.

I have nitpicks here and there with Discovery but overall I loved season 1 to 3 and it was something new as well which was a kind of bonus. I really don't understand the level of hate this show gets, why can't some sections of the fanbase just let others enjoy this and not try and ruin their fun?

Isn't that the very spirit of IDIC, and of Star Trek?

I agree with you. Sometimes they just don't know when to quit. It gets old. I was going through a rough patch in life at the time DSC premiered, I was glad to have Trek back, and I thought it was the best Trek in a long time. For me, it was something to take my mind off the Hell my life had become at the time...

... and some people here don't realize the other point of view. What's trash to them is treasure to someone else. Or they don't care. I think criticism is one thing. But to deliberately go out of your way to rain on someone's parade on purpose is something else. Especially once you know you're pissing people off and do it anyway. I never did that in the VOY or ENT Forums when those shows were going. My belief was, and still is: "Let the people enjoy their shows."

I think there's a distinction between coming on to talk about a show and coming on to just bully people. I think there's a distinction between offering constructive criticism and offering nothing but hatred and bile. And if someone is still hating a show five years after it premiered, that's five years of dedication to hatred. That's not normal. That's not healthy. I wish they'd stop turning DSC into a punching bag and face whatever it is that's making them use it as one.

I hope that season 4 of Disco gets a physical release because that is the only way I'm going to watch the rest of the series. I have no intention of signing up for more streaming services then I have already. I really did enjoy all 3 seasons of the show.

I guess the only new show that didn't gel with me was Picard. For whatever reason I just can't get into that show and I have season one on disk but I just can't seem to get into that one and I have tried more then once to like it.

I felt the Burn story was a very TOS kind of thing. Lots of people disagree but hey that's life.

I loved S1 & S2, and do not understand the hate. They're the most I've enjoyed Trek since DS9 S6.

I was less keen on S3 and felt it moved in a direction which I found less appealing, but I did not feel any compulsion to rant about it.

The decreased interest from that and the move from Netflix to Paramount+ mean I've not seen S4 yet, but I'll check it and SNW out in a few months.

Disco is not really a show for me personally (ironic, given the fact that it’s the ONE Trek series that has a basic level of lgbt+ representation I appreciate) but I did enjoy the first two seasons… mostly because of Lorca and Pike, granted. The last thing I’d ever do would be to ruin the fun for others who enjoy it tho - just because I didn’t really get invested in it doesn’t mean others can’t or shouldn’t.

At first I could kinda see why some people were riled up, the first season did shake up things (the Klingons etc), but those who STILL hate on it now after like what, four seasons? It has become an obsession.

tl;dr: I think a lot of those rabid Disco haters missed the “don’t like? Then simply don’t watch” exit on the fandom highway a long, long time ago.

Those are the three reasons people hate it so passionately, with one or two switching places depending upon preference. Trek fan who MUST watch EVERYTHING and reference their complete set of The Official Star Trek Fact Files frequently throughout.

There's actually so much great TV these days. I find it better to spend time watching shows I like rather than stomping around online shitting on stuff. Latest example for me is the Halo show. I watched 2 episodes, had enough of that and done. Others are enjoying it and good for them. I watched Yellowjackets instead and loved it.

I really do need to give Discovery Season 4 another shot. I watched the first 2 or 3 and then just didn't feel compelled to go back, but it might have been due to my mood at the time as opposed to the quality of it.

To me, TV is not something sufficiently important to be angry about. It's all just entertainment.

I saw season one, then was very disappointed to read on Memory Alpha that they'd abandoned the 'Pre-Kirk' setting to throw them nearly 1000 years into the future in season 3. Watching Season 4 with all the gizmos and CGI just annoyed the nerves off me because of that - along with the hassle of trying to watch it on PlutoTV, that is.
But do people hate it because of that? Because they were promised one thing and it ended up another?

If I may be so bold, I don't think you hate DSC, I think you just dislike it. So you're not who we're talking about.

And besides, this topic asks about the rabid HATE towards Disco, not about the legitimate critcism, which is a perfectly fine thing to have. I mean I love TNG but I'm also the first in line to agree about its glaring flaws. You CAN love something AND also NOT love something at the same time.

Respectfully, and perhaps controversially, I think it's dangerous to believe that these are the primary reasons fan's don't like the show. It's easy to just label people racists or general bigots these days....far too easy.

Yes, there are low-brow morons on social media and YouTube who will go there, but for the most part, DSC is disliked for the same reasons every new version of Star Trek is disliked: because it's not the old version of Star Trek.

Yes, there are bigots who don't like DSC or PIC or JJStar Wars or whatever. But there are also bigots who don't like Cheerios. Let's try not see racist, misogynist, bigots everywhere we turn and use that label to (far too) easily assign rationalization to why someone disagrees with us. I think that's painting with a very broad, dangerous brush. There are lots of really good, rational people right here on this board who don't like DSC because it doesn't appeal to them (style, writing, characters, serialized concept, high action content, Gene's Vision, setting, production design, etc).

To respond to the thread title:
I also don't understand many things.

But so many people have, throughout this board, explained their sincere problems with it, that to not understand it at this point is to . . . I don't know, be willfully ignoring what people have said (myself included)?

Boy, did I want to like a new iteration of Star Trek. I was ok with S1 - S2, though they both took a nose dive after the first 1/2 or so. S3 . . . I finally took ppls advice and stopped watching in S4.

I hate women and people of color, some would say, since I can't stand DSC. This is not a straw person argument: numerous folks have put forth that idea in blanket statements in numerous threads. As if thinking a show is shite must be motivated from those dark places. Lots of shows I think suck that have white males as the cast. But truly, most things put out aren't very good, or even suck. Sturgeon's Law.

I like PRO, loved PIC this season, still like it, so don't say I hate all new Trek because it is new, either.

Honestly, this thread topic feels like my friend a few years ago. (Disclaimer: I was virulently anti-Trump.) He would say, "But HOW could anyone vote for him?"

I would explain how many non-racist people in my rust belt town could vote for him after being sold down the river by both parties. Or pro-life people who think preserving [you choose: foetus/human life] is the one issue that overrules all else.

Then he would go, "Yeah, but HOW could anyone vote for him?"

You don't have to empathize or share their feelings. But people who think DSC sucks have told you many different reasons why. Many times. I am not doing so in this post, because I don't feel like it; don't want to dwell on its negatives; and people would just argue back or offer whaddabouts. I think.

It's one of the current shows, and people always hate the current shows. Once it ends and a new series replaces it, we'll hear all the same stuff about how the new show sucks, pisses on Gene's Vision, too woke or whatever with everyone now claiming that "man, Disco was an amazing show after all."
