Oh I'm sorry to point out the obvious that most people are considered unintelligent. That's a fact. Also, I never said watching Star Trek makes you smart. I said, most Star Trek fans are above average intelligence. It was even in the fucking study that this thread is about. From my own observations I was agreeing with the data. And I never said that people who don't watch Star Trek are stupid or that I hate them.
So if you feel that Star Trek doesn't have depth and isn't well thought out then why do you like it? If something isn't well thought out, then surely it can't be good.
And yeah, I do judge people on their taste in music, books, films. I'm not saying that if someone likes an album or a movie I don't that I immediately dislike or judge them. I argue with friends all the time about music and films, but it's never personal and we always respect each others opinion. I understand why people enjoy things I don't because not everything is for me, but what I was getting at is there is so much media out there that is such garbage that it escapes me how anyone could get any enjoyment out of it. That's when I feel contempt for people because they are continuing to encourage the film and music industry to create and promote utter bullshit.
So is there a study you can link to that shows most people are unintelligent? Yes, not everyone is Einstein, but
unintelligent? I think thats a stretch, even if Shatnerage's statement is true. 50% is not "more" and below average is not "unintelligent"
Now the study in question states that "Females : 57% Males 43% , primarily single, over 40, and
fairly well educated – all results from some of the basic demographics. Thats not the same as being "highly intelligent". Folks like to unwind and be entertained in different ways. A physicst might like to watch the Three Stooges, rock out to Katy Perry and read romance novels as a way to unwind. A garbage man might prefer films of the French New Wave, Opera and Kant as his way to relax.
There are a lot people on this board who's taste in film, books and TV do not agree with mine. Some of whom might very well be more intelligent than me. (Some might even be Voyager fans!!!

) For example, there's a thread in TV & Media about Heavy Metal music. Not my cuppa, but many of the folks in that thread are posters I think of as coming accross as highly intelligent. So I read through hoping to gain a little insight. Didn't make me want to become a headbanger but I will not disparage their intellect for liking Heavy Metal.
Now if you want to talk about Treks themes here's one for you from the survey: "There was a wide range of responses to how fans chose to express themselves, how they felt Star Trek influenced or impacted them, and how they felt they fit as a member of this culture.
"IDIC (
infinite diversity in infinite combinations) was the primary ideological choice – selected by 51% of fans, with Humanism and Christianity not too far behind."
I think you might be in the 49% given your statements.
Maybe someone else need the reading lesson?
And lets look at those statements:
It takes people of "above average" intellect to fully grasp and understand Trek. It's not a typical story based on mythology of good overcoming evil like Star Wars.
Yet is it very typical in it theme, story structure and characters. Nor is it so "intellectual" that the average viewer can't grasp its meaning.
I was referring to the science in Star Trek and the ethical/moral issues.
Now you've moved the goal posts a bit by touting its science, which is dodgy at best and often more fiction than science. The ethics and morality on display in Trek aren't all that complex either. Most would be covered by the Golden Rule.
Then there are gems like this:
I didn't say that you HAVE to be a genius to like Star Trek, but to really get into it and understand the dynamics one must be smarter than the average person(which isn't that hard). The same applies for music and literature. A lot of Americans don't want shows that are complicated. They want explosions and sex. Most popular television shows, movies, music and books are incredibly bland without any real depth. So why are they popular? Because most people are morons.
Not very IDIC.
Creation is the ultimate expression, and if you enjoy shitty movies and music, I can't help but feel nothing but contempt
Surak would be proud.
But back to your latest post.
Star Trek has a certain depth, but its not real deep. I've read and watched much deeper and more complex works. Its Philosophy 101 at best. No as a whole its not very well thought out. Anyone watching the entire franchise in chronological order can parse that with ease. It started as an episodic TV show that evolved on a week to week basis. Some times moving forward, sometime back and at time even erasing what went before. It changed into a a series of movies most of which were not produced by the man who created the TV show. Then it became a TV Show again, but with a slightly changed vision and spawned several other TV shows that ran parallel with the film series ( again produced with Rodenberry). So it is the result of many visions and not a single vision.
I enjoy Star Trek for a variety of reasons. The characters, the settings, the stories all can appeal to me depending on the episode. The "thought" put into each one varies. Some are silly, some are serious, some try and address issues and some don't. Its a mixed bag.
To further explain my views so nothing is misconstrued, music and film are my life. It angers me when such terrible forms of art(if you can call them that) are praised by the masses.
Sure, it sounds profound but what does that mean exactly?
