Huge Study About Trek Fans

Wow, and after I went to the trouble to find the quotes and everything.

I think this thread has been an excellent study of certain factions of Star Trek fandom.

And my crack about 50% of the population having below-average intelligence was just a little reminder of the nature of statistics. Naturally, if you define an exact mid-point for anything, half the population will be above it, and half below.

But I think it's really important not to look down on people for liking other forms of pop culture more than your own favorite brand of pop culture.

Creation is the ultimate expression, and if you enjoy shitty movies and music, I can't help but feel nothing but contempt
Surak would be proud.

Solok sure would be...I find myself reminded of his very non-IDIC behavior. No wonder he had to be shut up on a Vulcan-only ship; his ability to deal with others was lacking. This definitely is not IDIC.

Most of what I would have said has been said here by others, but I wanted to second the remark about Star Trek "science." It is dodgy at best, outright pseudoscience and technobabble at worst. It is simply a plot vehicle. As someone who writes fanfic, I can tell you that from the "inside" as well. I may try to research certain things, but I don't need any more than what I can get off of Wikipedia to pull off a reasonably Trek-like story. (And could probably get away with less if I weren't so anal about it.)

Did you guys know that half of all Americans have below average intelligence?
Wrong, with respect that's not how it works, fifty percent of any given population is average intelligence, with twenty-five percent being either above or below.

Americans as a national group score slightly above the over all Human average, trailing behind North-east Asians national groups and Israelis.

Of course, the test was designed by Westerners, so nothing can be inferred into the score differences. If you removed educational and cultural differences--such as putting all people into the Asian or Israeli educational system, results would "norm out" species-wide.

Why is it that the people who insist the hardest that SF/Fantasy fans are an intellectual elite come across as the least intelligent in their posts?
