How would other captains handle "In the Pale Moonlight"?

L

Lord Garth

Guest
How do you think Kirk, Picard, Janeway, and Archer would've handled Sisko's situation?

And, to throw something a little extra into the mix, how do you think Adama would've handled it?

IMO:

Kirk -- After being convinced the Romulans need evidence, he'd try to create a situation that would convince the Romulans of the Dominion's true colors as opposed to evidence. Would never approach Garak.

Picard -- Would approach Garak for intelligence but would've stopped as soon as Garak would make the suggestion to manufacture evidence. Picard would instead focus on an argument that was less "self-serving" while Garak would create a forgery behind his back, and plant the data rod so Picard could "discover" it. Picard would piece together the evidence after Vreenak's shuttle exploded, and not agree with Garak in the end.

Janeway -- Half-way between Sisko and Picard. She'd follow Sisko's steps but would disagree with Garak's means in the end.

Archer -- No clue. I haven't seen anywhere near enough ENT.

Adama -- Wouldn't like going to Garak but would recognise the need to forge evidence if the Federation and Starfleet was to survive. He'd wonder if the Federation was really worth saving if it came down to this but would realize that it would have to come down to this and his feelings about the forgery would end there despite what he might ponder intellectually.

I agree. Although I think Adama would've scared Vreenak into submission just by being Adama.

I don't know what Archer would have done. I think he would tried Kirk's approach. I'm certain he'd have gotten beaten up by Vreenak's guards at some point.

Kirk would have no problem.
Janeway would think it was a fun thing.
Picard would have seen Garaks plan 'B' and taken measures to prevent it.
that other guy...hummm I dunno he was non compos mentis compared to the others. If he tried it...he'd have gotton caught and we'd all be speaking Romulan today.

The more I watch ENT the more Archer resembles (in some ways) Sisko/Janeway hybrid (scary). Archer pulled out the phase pistol shot Garak after he planted the bomb and blamed the Vulcans

Kirk would never have trusted Garak's help. He may have beeen willing to deceive the Romulans, but he'd do it on his own terms.

I don't think the whole she-bang would have even occured to Picard. Picard would have seen it as a betrayal of the very Federation he was fighting to protect.

Janeway would have blown up Vreenak's shuttle without even bothering with a deception.

Archer wouldn't trust Garak. He'd just whine and threaten Vreenak.

Adama-- Same as Sisko, but without the soul-searching log entry.

Captain Jack Harkness-- Vreenak, a couple of Dabo girls, a Barry White CD, and a copy of Vulcan Love Slave III.

Picard and Archer would have lost the alliance. Neither would have even begun to allow this to happen. And Picard specifically would most definitely be one step ahead of Garak in preventing him from going behind his back to make it happen anyway.

Janeway would disagree with Garak, Garak would (unlike Picard) succeed in making it happen. Janeway would be none the wiser.

Kirk would also disagree with Garak and would have used Garak to come up with a different means to bring them into the war that didn't violate the ideals of the Federation. Kirk in fact would be the best captain (even better than Sisko) for this specific situation. (This means a lot coming from me, as I don't like TOS or Kirk).

Adama, I agree fully with AdmiralGarak he'd have done exactly as Sisko did and wouldn't have had all the crying about it later.

And Since I watch too much Sci-Fi....

Captain Dylan Hunt would do much like Kirk would, except his means of coming up with something wouldn't have involed Garak at all.

Colonel O'Neill would lead his team to go do whatever was necessary himself, and probably had Garak detained at the SGC (er. uhm... in the Brig ;) )

Captain Sheridan (now President Sheridan) would simply talk to the Romulans and they'd agree. Because Sheridan is (warning random video game term ahead) broken!

Captain Tweedle (yes I watch Lexx too!) would simply go blow up Cardassian Prime, and then Romulus, and for the heck of it Remus, Vulcan, Andor, and Earth too.

Captain Crunch would drown them all in milk... ;) What?!?!

That's cuz Cap'n Crunch is the shit. You and Cap'n make it happen!

The Captain (aka Daryl Dragon) would sick Tennille on Vreenak, love would keep the alpha quadrant together.

Captain Jack Sparrow, would do something crazy, but it would work. And then there'd be 6 hours of convaluted plotting and the war between the Dominion would end after the DEFIANT and General Martok's ship double teamed the Female Changling's flagship.

Captain Lou Albano would get super mario on their asses.

My answer is all the other Captains would have failed at handling the ITPM situation, the Rommies never would have joined the war vs. the Dominion, and as a result the Feds woulda ultimately lost the Alpha Quadrant.

To me this is the whole point of ITPM. Sisko did what needed to be done.

Those with wishy-washy "Let's get this done, but we must not go too far in doing so" approaches to the situation - like the other Captains would have - cannot succeed.

Kirk: You... must... join the... war effort... for the good...
Vreenak: Ok we'll join the war, just please stop talking like that...

Picard: You inferior alien foreheads really need to clean up your act and join the war effort.
Vreenak: Ok, ok, stop lecturing us and we'll join the war.

Janeway in Munchkin voice: You Romulans...
Vreenak: We'll join the war! Just please stop talking!

Archer: I once saw a gazelle giving birth...
Vreenak: We're joining the war! Please don't tell that story!

The Bleach Captains

Captain of Squad 11: Chases Vreenak around the seireitei untill he agrees to go to war with the Dominion.

Captain of Squad 12: Would take Vreenak in for "experimentation" and eventually turn his romulan body into mush.

Captain Aizen of Squad 5: Would make a deal with the Hollows in heuco mundi to attack the Romulans provoking them to start a war with the Dominion. Or he would screw over the Romulans directly.

Captain Ukitake of Squad 13: He would lock himself in his quarters and have his two lietenants take care of the work, the two leiteinants would fight each other over who gets to hand Vreenak the data rod.

Kirk would have won the war long before they got to the point where there was a need to fight dirty. Probably by seducing the female Changling.

It would depend on what personliaty Janeway had adopted for that particular episode, she seemed quite erratic in voyager.

Commander John Crichton would have threatened everyone with a giant gaping wormhole until everything went his way.

Captain Atom may have exploded.

Captain America would have snuck Hulkling into the Romulan senate as a high-ranking official to convince them it was a good idea.

Professor Xavier...I don't know what he would have done, but he probably would have been a dick about it.

They'd phone Ben Sisko and give him the job.

Yeah, well Captain Dexter wouldn't have let Garak kill Vreenak, he'd have to do it himself. :p He probably would have got along splendidly with the Cardassian tailor, actually, though I bet Worf would rough him up a bit.

Anyway, how I think our Trek heroes would handle the issue...

Kirk: Pretty much the same. Right down to the moral doubt at the end. He deals with a roughly similar crisis in "A Private Little War."
Picard: He'd never allow it. Period. He wouldn't falsify the information, he would have said 'Thank you Mr. Garak' and left it at that, as Sisko reflected he might have. He faced a similar matter in 'The Pegasus' and 'I, Borg.' Well, he might have given Garak a stern lecture first. And he's my favourite captain, you know.
Janeway: See Picard, only the lecture is a definite. Somehow, the Dominion War would have resolved itself at the end of the episode too. See 'Alliances.'
Archer: He'd insult Vreenak a lot and never figure out Garak did it. No specific episodes I can think of, but just his general method of diplomacy sui generis, especially for Vulcans.

Looking at the novels

Captain M-A-Kenzy Calhoon would probably act like a combination of Kirk and Sisko ,Probably destroyed the ambassadors shuttle himself and blamed the cardassians
Captain Elizabeth Paula Shelby Pretty much the sameprobably
challenging there honour calling them cowards for not having the guts to fight the Dominion

I agree with this assessment 100%.

Picard and Janeway would have said 'Thanks, but no thanks!" plus added in some lectures (Janeway's being the longer of the two) about how We Must Stick To Our Principles Because We Are Starfleet Officers.

Kirk would have done exactly what Sisko did.

And Archer - probably Archer himself wouldn't be able to tell you what he would do - that would depend upon who was writing him that day.

As for Adama...well, IMO that is a more interesting question...because Adama does have some strong morals, even in situations where he could easily rationalize the end justifying the means.

I mean, this is the guy who voted Baltar 'not guilty'! And lord knows, there is NO ONE whose personal interests (not to mention his charge to protect the fleet) lie more in Baltar's elimination than Adama!

On the flip side, however, Adama is not above fighting dirty when it comes to the Cylons themselves - he has different standards for Cylons and humans (however despicable said humans might be).

So I don't know. I think he would do something similar to what Sisko did. Although chances are, before he got a chance to do ANYTHING, someone else would have already taken care of it for him without him even knowing about it up-front. BSG is chock full of characters who are famous for taking matters into their own hands, after all! And certainly Roslin would have no trouble at all doing what Sisko did. And further, I'm not even sure she would fret about it later!

:guffaw:

best take ever!

Seriously, I think only Kirk and Janeway would have a chance of succeeding in this scenairo. Their solutions would've been similar to Sisko's

Kirk with less doubt then Sisko, though Sisko was pretty cool about it. Janeway (as much as the writers seemed to go way out of their way at times to make me not like her) would have ben just as agressive and I think might've taken out the abassador herself.

There were times I really liked her as Captian...just that /voice/ :p
