How Federated is the Federation?

Really, in Journey to Babel where was the Earth ambassador?

He might already be at Babel as the Babel conferrence could have been towards the end of admission talks and this was the last round of discussions before a vote was taken.

There are a few candidates in the background of JTB.
There are these three
The woman with the black hair and paisley patterned dress behind Kirk.
The guy in the grey suit over McCoy's shoulder.
The guy in the Garth/Ferris jacket between McCoy and Spock
Grey suit talking to Paisley
Garth Jacket talking to a redshirt. Redshirt might be an Ambassador or Starfleet.
Woman in Red talking to Paisley.
My head canon tells me, Garth Jacket is from Izar. Lady in Red is from Mars. Paisley is from Alpha Centauri and Grey Suit is from Earth because he seems to be schmoozing the most. ;)

The obvious caveats to that are things like slavery- a planet practicing it wouldn't be offered admission to the Federation in the first place.
If the federation has a open door policy towards new members (like the UN) maybe not. I don't think slavery ever came up.

I'm not sure we ever saw any concrete examples of this, possibly with the exception of the 'Unification' storyline.
We learned on DS9 that Vulcan and the Klingon Empire directly exchange ambassadors and embassies. Kor at one point was stationed in the Klingon embassy on Vulcan.

In TAS, federation members exchange ambassadors directly with each other.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for member worlds to have individual embassies on each others' worlds (or even non-aligned worlds) without that interfering or 'stepping on' the Federation's jurisdiction with regard to its responsibilities in interstellar space.

Hate to admit this but I've never noticed these people in the episode before! Too busy watching Sarek and The Tellerites and Andorians and little gold guys I guess!

As a viewer you are supposed to be focused on Sarek and friends, but as a Trekkie you're supposed to notice everything from the color of the paint on the walls to the smallest costume detail. ;)

Normally I do notice the faces in the background or the like but it was so colourful in that room and very diplomatic that I got taken away with it all! :techman: Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :ack:

It seems that the primary influence that the Federation has on its members is through the application process, where certain standards and guidelines must be met before membership can be approved.
Thus planets like Ardana can become members, but once they are members there is a limited amount of influence that can be wielded by Federation representatives on their domestic affairs.

And then Kirk shows up. ;)

"United Federation of Planets" just sounds cool, and so is that flag of the UFP that makes a brief appearence in "And The Children Shall Lead".

The ONLY worthwhile moment in that episode!

Yeah, the episode really sucked. I thought the teaser was good, with the tragic mass suicide and the encounter between Kirk and Professor Starnes, but when the kids appeared I thought "Oh, crap. Another 'Miri' rehash episode".

How Federated is teh Federation?

It is Federated at a rate of 1.7^3 Kissingers per revolution.

Bigger question is how united is the united, in United Federation of Planets?

Are they really all that "united?"
