How do you say 'TOS' ?

We say them all as words. The movies are /timp/, /twåk/, /tisfis/, /tv'H/, /tiff/, /tuk/, /jen/, /fk/ (careful!), and /ins/. We do not speak of that supposed last /ting/ film.

As for Trek XI, we don't know what to do. /ixl/? /peesakrap/? Please advise.

funnin' y'all

They're abbreviations, so we say them that way.

I am trying to call TOS "Star Trek" now, thanks to someone else on this board.

I never thought about that - I mostly interact on Trek in English through the typed media anyway. In my native tongue, letters are pronounced the same way regardless of whether you are spelling them out one by one or pronouncing whole words, so T-O-S and TOS are one and the same. (The latter just takes less time overall, and the former may have some short parasitic vowels bothering some of the consonants - like T, which becomes more like "Te as in template". As if you really cared.)

Basically, ENT and VOY are acronyms to start with - they are pieces of pronounceable words, after all. DS9 is probably the least acronymic of the lot, and doesn't sound acronymic in the least even when I do it in Finnish.

Timo Saloniemi

Good question! I pretty much tend to use English abbreviations/acronyms even in Finnish with my husband. I'm pretty sure I've seen Next Gen translated as "Star Trek - Uusi Sukupolvi" somewhere, but I'm equally certain that DS9, VOY and ENT simply use the original names in Finnish...

And yeah, for me it's definitely VOY rather than VGR, simply because I tend to sound out the names in my head when I read (toss, voy, ent, dee-ess-nine, tas (a as in father) but next gen) them.

Sometimes just for the heck of it I say Kirk-trek and Picard-trek, but for some reason I never name any of the other captains...

I've said "Toss" when I wanted to be a smart ass. Didn't know people actually use it. Shows my ignorance.

Do you spell it out, ie "T-O-S" or do you say it ie "toss" ?
I actually say it all out, as in "The Original Series". I treat it more as shorthand than as a word or acronym.
I wouldn't try to pronounce it, if only because the others are basically unpronounceable.
I mean, would you pronounce TNG as "tunig" or something? "disnine"?
VOY is easy to pronounce, but again if I'm reading aloud I just pretend it's the full word "Voyager".

This also helps to communicate with trekkies and trekkers who are not quite so deep into it as I am. ;)

When speaking I never say TOS,toss or even "The Original Series" its always Star Trek. TOS is pretty much an online thing.

Do you spell it out, ie "T-O-S" or do you say it ie "toss" ?

For as long as I've known the acronym I've said it as a word, like 'toss' even though I spell out DS9 and TNG. Weird.

What do you do?

"Toss"?!?

That's just weird.

It's TEE - OHH - ESS.

Or, simply "Star Trek".
