How do you say 'TOS' ?

I never thought about that - I mostly interact on Trek in English through the typed media anyway. In my native tongue, letters are pronounced the same way regardless of whether you are spelling them out one by one or pronouncing whole words, so T-O-S and TOS are one and the same. (The latter just takes less time overall, and the former may have some short parasitic vowels bothering some of the consonants - like T, which becomes more like "Te as in template". As if you really cared.)

Basically, ENT and VOY are acronyms to start with - they are pieces of pronounceable words, after all. DS9 is probably the least acronymic of the lot, and doesn't sound acronymic in the least even when I do it in Finnish.

Regarding that... The other TLAs seem pretty well established, even DSN has more or less disappeared in favor of DS9 - but people still disagree on the VOY vs. VGR issue. What's your take on that? Does the acronymlet or the abbreviation roll more easily off your typing fingers?

I don't. It's always "the original series", although if speaking to a non-Trekkie I'd simply say "Star Trek".

We say them all as words. The movies are /timp/, /twåk/, /tisfis/, /tv'H/, /tiff/, /tuk/, /jen/, /fk/ (careful!), and /ins/. We do not speak of that supposed last /ting/ film.

As for Trek XI, we don't know what to do. /ixl/? /peesakrap/? Please advise.

Which makes them abbreviations. ENT would be an acronym if it stood for something like “East Nairobi Transport,” and was pronounced to rhyme with “bent.”

I call the fourth Trek film The One With The Whales. Doesn't everybody?

I guess, 'cos I'm Finnish, it's easier in my language to say 'tos'.

I call TNG just simply TNG because it sounds nice...

If I speak about VOY I just say Voyager. Same goes with Enterprise, but I don't really speak about it much.

And DS9 goes by Dee Ess Nine, mainly 'cos 9 is so much shorter in English than in Finnish :)

I call XI "Star Trek" or Ess Tee Oh Nine. I suppose it could be Ess Tee Ex Eye, But I stopped with the Romans. The next one is ST12 or STXII if you must.

Skipping over the thread, so this may be superfluous, but I pronounce TOS "Star Trek." That movie has various pronunciations, such as "reboot" or "remake" or "turd."

I kind of like "Deep Trek". Funky.
I think I saw that one. It starred Linda Lovelace as Seven of Nine... right?

TOS is actually T. O. S. which is an abbreviation for The Original Series, so Tee Oh Ess is correct.

ST09 or "the new Star Trek movie that brought Trek back from the dead" or "the one that made liking Trek cool again".

Do you spell it out, ie "T-O-S" or do you say it ie "toss" ?

For as long as I've known the acronym I've said it as a word, like 'toss' even though I spell out DS9 and TNG. Weird.

What do you do?

TOS: I pronounce the 't' with a 'ts' sound...'ts'--oh--ssss...

DS9: 'Doh-esssss Nine'

TNG: 'T-ing'....the 'ng' pronounced like the Chinese name 'Ng'....

VOY: Like 'yo me voy'....en espanol....

ENT: Prounced like the 'tree-thingy things' in Lord of the Rings...

People who never heard of Star Trek usually know what I'm talking about....

T. O. S. - but who really cares? Whatever we call it, correct or not, will undoubtedly cause some social misfit, living in his mother's basement, to go all apoplectic and spit tacks at the nearest unfortunate bystander...
