How do the new Star Trek shows compare to The Mandolarian?

Orville and LD hit me in exactly the same way: fine to watch, even fun at times...but massively derivative and entirely (and almost immediately) forgettable.
This is interesting. Lower Decks was more enjoyable because of Mariner, but, I can see this opinion. Orville, sadly just wasn't engaging enough for me to go "Yes, I want to watch more." It slides by on the measure of "Just OK" and perhaps for a TV series that is damning with faint praise.

Fox is also notorious for cutting shows too early. Like Futurama, Family Guy (although they reversed this decision), Arrested Development, Firefly, etc...

Those examples are all like 15 to 20 years old now. A child born the day Firefly aired its last episode is a grown adult now.

Maybe it's because I'm old,(18 when Episode IV was released) but I didn't quite get the level of feels from MANDO 2's final episode. It was nice seeing some old friends. The scene between Grogu and Din was touching but not tear worthy. DISCO has given me more feels and tears.

Indeed, yes. I have connected to these characters more than any on the Mandalorian. Grogu and Din simply lack the appeal as most Discovery's characters. I have fan interest but not investment in the Mandalorian. In Discovery (and even Picard, somehow) I had investment in these characters, where they are going and what happens to them.

Maybe I'm old too; though, I have clients call me vintage.

I am a fan of both but Trek has always been far more important to me.

Mandalorian has hit a homerun for me with regards to Star Wars. Almost erasing the pain of the last two movies in the recent trilogy.

Recent Trek, including Lower Decks, have not had the same impact for me when watching. I think with Mandalorian the special effects are better, the stories are better (even if more simple) the editing/pacing is better, the music and costumes better and even the acting. I haven't seen a home run out of a Trek show since Season 4 of Enterprise with "In a mirror darkly".

I think that recent Trek has suffered mostly from poor writing, and the changes behind the scenes with different show runners and such. Discovery has improved in season three in my view and that bodes well for the next seasons but it hasn't blown me away even once. Mandalorian HAS, and on more than one occasion.

Trek to me has always been more important to me as well for years in that I feel more connected in general to it, than even stuff I know is objectively better. Like i knew Sopranos and Veep and Breaking Bad is better than anything Trek has made. But Trek still tends to feel more special though I guess Imostly feel that way with the Trek's I grew up on. I think the Kelvinverse was maybe the last Trek that still makes me feel that way. I like Picard yet even it doesn't make me feel that way. I think it's because they lack the fun and sort of hopefulness of old Trek. It had better escapism and presents a better future by simply creating a world were people would actually want to live in despite the various issues within it like Romulans and Borg. The characters seem to like each other even whey don't get along at times like Spock and Bones or Odo and Quark.

Other shows have captured that feeling as well like the Stargate shows and The Orville and interesting enough also The Mandalorian. Mando's love with Grogru really captures the heart and gives the show a emotional resonance that makes all the top level kickass badass coolness even better by giving it some depth even if the stories themselves tend to be kind of simple adventure missions.

Modern Trek could learn a lot from this and you know Discovery almost does. The stuff between Stamets, Culber and Adira does offer lots of heart. It's also the best written stuff on the show. I'm actually kind of convinced that is because it's the stuff the writers actually care about writing while Kurtzman is still trying to force people into liking Burnham which I don't see happening at this point. The show would improve greatly if they just dumped the character and focused on everyone else but I don't see it happening.

Picard on the other hand is better written overall and has better characters overall but I think Picard gets shoved in the background to much yet he is the character that provides the most emotional resonance IMO. The show was at it's very best in those first 3 episodes before Picard and them left for space and it was him just dealing with his feelings and of course the Riker and Troi episode. All the plot stuff actually hurts the show a little IMO. This show should be even more Picard centered and more character driven.

Lower Decks had some okay jokes but I just don't think the kind of humor it goes for works well in Trek or maybe it's just the characters don't really interest me that much.

Wow I agree with everything you said here. I like how you mentioned Stargate and Orville too, as I love those as well. The first three episodes of Picard, while a bit slow, I loved too. It gave me anticipation for what was coming next.

In Discovery the Stamets stuff is very good. I liked Lower Decks but that style is not usually what I go for. The last episode was very good imo.

This captures how I feel too.

I want stuff like Trek to be thought provoking and not dumbed down, but fun is still the primary goal. I look to things like Succession, Better Call Saul, Black Mirror, Atlanta etc to be more challenging and pushing the envelope. Of course it's hard these days. Every since The Sopranos and the rise of cable, pushing the envelope and taking chances has become so accepted it not really pushing the envelope or taking chances anymore. Nothing bothers people anymore other than a tv show having the wrong political stance which usually comes down to a strong female or weak male towards those on the right and edgy jokes for those on the left. It's a weird time for art.

I like Orville, but it's too much with the irreverent juvenile jokes.

Maybe age is a factor. I was in kindergarten when Star Wars (no bloody episodes) premiered. I played with the toys incessantly. Rogue One, Solo, and Mandalorian gives me the same feeling I had playing with those toys. Side adventures.

Actually finally watching Mando. Baby Yoda is so cute!

Then episode 4 starts and I goaned out load. I've seen this episode before, in Stargate, in Enterprise...

And it certainly looks better than Discovery or Picard, those ships and effects are movie quality.

But content-wise they're different shows. One is about one guy protecting a baby in space and the other is a group of space adventurers doing it for the lolz.

Honestly, Mandalorian feels like that to me too. But, with that comes little weight because it is someone else's character that I have no connection with.

Mandalorian ranks below 3 of the 4 new Trek shows. even Short Treks is superior. Still, its an upgrade over the SW movies.
