How did you become a DS9 fan?

How did you first become a Niner?

"Emissary" The pilot episode had me at hello. Loved the drama and the issues Sisko and the crew had to face with out being idiots killing whatever they saw. The writing set objectives the characters needed to face and deal with - without running away. It was a great series in the beginning.

But unfortunately that didn't last. What killed it for me was the constant adolescent, fan-wankery War which ran on for 4 seasons. Completely making most the bullshit stories from THOSE seasons forgettable in Treklore. Check out Star Trek Nemesis, Wolf doesn't even acknowledge DS9 or the crap of him being an Ambassador.

Just as the woman, that was sucking Jake's creative juices out of him, like a mental leech of some kind, said about artists, I have a weakness for DS9. To me, even when it's bad, it's still very good and at the very least, I enjoy the hell out if it.

I became a big fan of DS9 before even watching the actual episodes.

Back in 1996 I got the Star Trek Omnipedia CD-ROM for Christmas, and before that had only been a casual Trek fan (TNG and movies) but had my interest piqued that year due to watching First Contact at the movies. That Christmas many of my gifts from parents were Trek related. Regarding DS9, the Omnipedia featured information about only the first two seasons, and I acquainted myself with the characters and storyline. The song 'Don't Stop Movin' by Livin' Joy will always remind me of DS9 and Bajor.

1996 was the year I became a full-fledged Trekkie. It was also in my opinion the BEST year of Trek, and coincidentally was a year of certain personal and philosophical maturation for myself as well.

I remember by 1999 hiring the DS9 VHSs as they were still being released, the walk to the video shop would always be a nailbiting one, wondering how the Dominion War would progress.

Those were the days....

I actually just became a DS9 fan in 2011. I had heard of it, of course, but for some reason had never thought of watching it when it originally aired.
It was late May/early June of 2011. I had just watched a bunch of my TNG episodes for the 1,000th time and I was thinking about what to watch next. Because of the TNG/DS9 crossover episode that featured Bashir, I started to read a little bit about DS9 to see if it was worth watching, and boy am I glad I did. I heard about things like the Dominion War, obviously, from it being mentioned in the movies, and I also read that Patrick Stewart was in the first episode of DS9, and that Worf joins the cast later on. So with these things in mind, I went on Youtube to watch "Emmisary" and after I watched it, I thought to myself, "this is pretty cool." So I bought the first season and started to watch it. Before I knew it, I had bought the entire series, and I spent the summer of 2011 watching it, a few episodes a day after work. The series has now become my absolute favorite out of all of Trek. As many people have stated already, I think it had the best character development out of any of the series, and I like that it took Trek in new directions that it had not been before. I love that it is basically one long story line with a bunch of smaller story lines mixed in. I love the diverse cast, the re-occurring characters, the beautiful sets, everything!

I watched it during its original run. New episodes aired back to back with TNG. TNG was still doing a lot of great stuff and the early seasons of DS9 didn't stack up as well; Q-Less for example. I also had reservations about the cast - a Ferengi, a self righteous Bajoran, an arrogant doctor etc. And they were stuck on a space station - how exciting could that be? I didn't love it, but it was worth a watch. I remember liking "Captive Pursuit" when it first aired which gave me a bit of hope for the series and the "stuck on a station" concept. It was a slow process, but I slowly got sucked into the story through the first 2 seasons. By "Improbable Cause" I was completely hooked.

I watched DS9 from the start, though due to college and moving around I missed parts of Season Four and Five, so it got a little choppy. I was lukewarm about it. It fulfilled a Trek fix, and it would have just enough episodes to keep me hooked into it, but I don't think I really got into it until the episode "The Jem'Hadar". Once the Dominion was introduced I was more into it. And the Dominion War pushed DS9 over TNG as my favorite series.

Watched when it first aired, liked it, esp the latter seasons. Somewhat of a golden age, this and Babylon 5 running at the same time, good times indeed.
