The Bible Belt is a real dichotomy. I've lived all over the south and I know that while a great number of 'religious' people live here the opposite is also true. There are people who might give lip service to religion at weddings and funeral but as far as the rest of their lives go...they do what they want. If anything there are many 'different Souths' that exist side by side. Person over here could be in church every time the doors are open while their neighbor is the stereotypical hard drinking violent lawbreaking redneck. While I am sure there are religious people contracting the STDs (the two sides do mix after all) I would say they probably aren't the ones represented in the study.
And no, I'm not saying if you are not religious then you are by default a redneck. There are also varying categories in between the two extremes.
