How about a respectful religious vs non-religious discussion?

Yes but that makes no sense. It is, frankly, awful. It means that God will help you out if you have more people asking, like how many friends you have actually makes God like you more. And then meanwhile there are people who don't have a whole crowd getting together to do all that praying and those people have less chance of God caring what happens to them.
Like how 2 American Football teams pray before the game so God will help them win?!?
Wouldn't they cancel each-other out?

Maybe that's why nerds don't like football?

They're afraid that the jocks need sacrificial virgins?

I don't know how to explain this without it coming off like 'spiritual babble' but I'll try.

First off prayer isn't about 'you' or 'me'. (I use 'you' in the general sense). It's about 'you' getting your mind off of yourself and onto other people. Directing your thoughts completely in their direction toward ever their needs are. The idea is the more you pray for others, the more you focus outward and away from yourself and the idea is you become less selfish and less 'me' centered and more outward-centered. It should encourage us to act, if our neighbor is in need the more we pray for them the more we look for ways to help them ourselves. Of course, it goes without saying that a person can attain that mindset without praying.

Focusing outward instead of inward should also bring you closer to God and after a while, you become more attuned to the will of God in your life and the lives of others. It's not about 'what I want or what will make our lives easier' but what is best for us, and what will make us grow spiritually.' That, of course, presupposes that the 'you' in question believes in a higher power and if not all this descends into...spiritual babble.

It is a spiritual exercise, in other words, a way to tune out things that don't matter and tune into things that do and once again that presupposes that the person in question places a high priority on things 'spiritual'.

And speaking for Christians we are supposed to follow Christ's example whom most of us believe to have been God and he prayed...a lot. And he asked his followers to pray for him. I'm sure he already knew the outcome but he did it anyway. If you don't believe he was God or just a human being or didn't exist once again that won't make sense.

I know I haven't answered in a way that won't be satisfactory to most here and I've probably left some things out.... because it's a difficult thing to do to but there it is.

Oh...and most of the time those football teams are praying that it will be a fair and safe game ...not that they will win.

You're describing meditation and introspection.

Everyone does that.

HA!!

Oh, you... Footballer A and Footballer B are both praying that the other footballer has an aneurysm... Okay, actual Christians might not do that, but there are plenty of nonChristians forced to pray (before sports) who are positive that it doesn't matter how many murderthoughts they put out into the world, it will have no impact on anyone's health.

Prayer is fanfiction?

God is sometimes described as a "SkyGenie" which is why prayers are confused for wishes within the secular universe.

Well...most everyone. I don't know if Donald Trump would recognize a reflective moment if one came up and hit him in the face.

(says a quick Hail Mary for being judgemental.)

I look at prayer as being a means to change the outcome. I take that from the POV that God is supposedly ALL knowing and that he/she knows every possible outcome and the past and future, and what is to come. So we're trying to persuade God to change that outcome and have this person get well and recover.
This line of thinking inevitably leads to a mean-spirited and capricious god, demonstrating that he was invented by us in our image.

Are talking about Zeus?

Seriously, who the #### metamorphises into an swan before "seducing" a beautiful woman?

The signal is stronger and more reliable.

Do yourself some good, and watch season one of Grey's Anatomy.

Muuuuuuuch later, they live tweeted a surgery, remarked how fantastic twitter was, as doctors from all over the country collaborated on the surgery after it became harder than they first assumed... 3 years later, and there has been no second mention again of live Tweeting surgeries.

12 seasons in, and they are still screaming about their pagers.

I have watched the first few seasons of Grey's Anatomy but never really noticed the use of pagers. I don't get the live tweeting since they're not real doctors and the surgeries are not real... This is the TV show we are talking about isn't it? :)

It was a Sad Dad thing to do.

"Hey look at me! I'm hip! I'm on twitter!"

TV shows try to stay relevant to hook younger audiences with modcons and fads.

Checkov's wig for instance.

Oh!

Behold!

The Sparkle pager!

Sparkle pagers looks interesting and different.

LOL......... Regarding your sig.

BTW it's not just glitter........

I got a birthday card many years ago which had what felt like 100s of tiny red hearts inside made of metalic red paper and they fell out when the envelope was opened. And stuck in the carpet and we were still finding them 2 years after that.
