Honestly, Insurrection isn't that bad...

It is that bad. I was so excited after First Contact that I brought relatives to see it when it was released, and felt embarrassed at how terrible it was. The horrible dialogue, failed humour, lame action (which was so forced it felt like there was a timer determining when the next action scene would occur), cliched plot... UGH.

Worst of the TNG films, and that's saying something.

Right now, in today's society, the government can come in and use eminent domain to take away people's private property to build a new highway, a hospital, a school, etc. Sometimes, entire blocks of a town have to be cleared out to make way for something like that. Now, I'm not going to suggest that all uses of eminent domain are justifiable -- I don't like it when they try to seize land to build a casino, for example -- but we as a society have decided that sometimes, people's private property rights get overridden to support the public good.

Now, that is not exactly analogous, but it does a halfway decent job of illustrating the point. I don't think "they were here already" is always enough. Sometimes, there are other considerations.
when i was a kid, the city i lived in was supposed to build an oceanographic thingy in partnership with robert ballard, and emminent-domained an old neighborhood as part of that plan and there was a bit of an uproar.
and then the whole thing fell through...

This is exactly how I feel about Nemesis, and to an extent about both Generations, and Final Frontier. As far as FF is concerned, I had two coworkers along that had never seen Star Trek. They were thrilled with it. I had to bite my tongue before finally saying that the other films were "even better."

I have found that for me, subsequent viewings have softened my opinion, in that while I still consider FF and GEN bad Star Trek, they are still good films with entertaining stories. I haven't seen NEM a second time, and I doubt I will. There's just too much wrong with it for me to want to.

INS just feels small to me, not bad.

I re-watched the entire battle sequence in Nemesis last night, which is supposed to be the big event of the film. My opinion hasn't changed. It just falls flat to me. Everything about that film feels "off." It was kind of a mediocre script to begin with, but then Stuart Baird as a director just absolutely killed it. Others may disagree -- and I'm sure will! -- but I would rather watch Insurrection any day.
