Hockey Talk - 2007-2008 Season

Simon's done.

I always forget Columbus even exists as an NHL franchise. I never think about them, we hardly ever play them, they've never done anything to stand out in my mind during the post season.... but we beat them tonight, so I remember them now.

Yeah. I always forget about them and Atlanta (actually I am relatively surprised i remember them for this reference). Dont know why... it just happens. They dont irritate me, but they havent done anything to wow me either.

As for Simon, yeah hes pretty much done, especially if he doesnt get help.

$#!^!@$&*%*@%*!?!?%>%!

1:25 left in the third period, with Vesa Toskala working on a shutout... and Carolina scores twice and then wins it in overtime.

$*%(!^*)$#!^*?~#^$^?!#&(*(##%^@%~^!?

:censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

What made it worse is that Alexei Ponikarovsky was in the Carolina zone with the net empty, and HE DIDN'T SHOOT THE $*%!($*^!#$^*!#)^* PUCK!!!!

:censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:

Hal $#*!%^($#%^ Gill gives the puck away twice, both times resulting in goals... and Sportsnet awards him the game's second star? Were they watching the same :censored: game I was???

I learned something watching tonight's game, though... in overtime, a team getting two penalties is still allowed three men on the ice, and the team on the power play gets to put a fifth man on the ice. I never knew that rule.

Of course, the only reason the Leafs had two guys in the penalty box during overtime was because the :censored: referees didn't call two blatant Carolina penalties.

I remember Atlanta, because I'm going to georgia for a conference next October and I'm hoping to see a game!

On a positive note, Edmonton lost a shoot-out - I'm no Dallas fan, but I've got a little more love for them today. :D

If you can't score tickets, there is (was?) a pub somewhere in Atlanta that hosts a legion of Flames fans, left over from the days of the Atlanta Flames. I don't know if all those people jumped ship to the Thrashers... but, well, you could go there and show your true colours. :D

I can't remember the name, but I can whip out my mad google skillz.

And I don't think you'll have trouble scoring tickets.

judging by the empty seats I saw last night at the game, lower bowl tickets should be no problems

simon suspension

Chris Simon got 30 games from the league today and will forfeit over $290K in salary. The only thing wrong is that it runs concurrently with his "time away" from the team.

He's done

Phhh. Ill take Edmonton over Dallas anyday! Oh well, Oilers were bound lose a shootout eventually

I'm glad the Flames beat Vancouver last night. I didn't really watch the last half of the game, just sort of had it on in the background while I was doing other things.

My memory's fuzzy, but I'm thinking it was either last season or the season before where Calgary lost just about all 8 games to either Vancouver or Colorado (I'm leaning towards Vancouver). I was somewhat worried we were going to lose last night, especially after that first goal 2 1/2 minutes in. That would have sucked.

But at least it isn't as hard to score tickets this year, now that the wagon has cleared a bit.

That was a hell of a Winters Classic. So far that's my favorite sports moment of the Day. Good win for Pittsburgh but the atmosphere of it was awesome.

The outdoor games are a great idea. Like a freaking cold hockey festival or something. I'd try and go if one was held here.

I really am not a fan of the Penguins sweaters. Is that look temporary?

I hope so. They looked too old fashioned for my taste.

I only saw a photo in today's paper, but they looked to me like the original 1967 uniforms.

I believe so, the uniforms the Sabres sported were their original look from 1970.

None of the players on either roster were born in 1970

what I loved about the game was the enthusiasm the players had and how honored they seemed to be taking part in it. Sure, the conditions were pretty iffy at times, but you didn't hear one complaint

The Hockey News just named Crosby the most influential person in hockey, largely on the basis of the media storm surrounding him. Since The Hockey News was part and parcel of the creation of that media storm long before Sid the Kid even entered the NHL, does this count as a media circle jerk?

If I sound annoyed, it's because ... well, because I';m annoyed, I guess. And I'm a Penguins fan. What must this be like for the twelve fans of the Washington Caps?

I like Ryan Smyth, and I even like Colorado (when there's no one else to cheer for). Smyth breaking his foot is a pretty big blow to the team.

I think I've heard more media covering the media covering Crosby then I've heard covering Crosby himself.

Exactly my point. The comparison with Gretzkey breaks down the minute you realize how they've manufactured Crosby's reputation as a leader. He's good - really really good - but there's no grassroots here. His biography came out before he played in the NHL, IIRC. You want groundswell of interest? Look at Tavares or Marchand.

We really need a Sports forum. I came looking for this thread a couple of times and couldn't find it.

Anyways, go Habs and all that.

some quick hits today

Rick Nash goal

if you haven't seen this, it's amazing

50 years ago yesterday, Willie O Ree broke the color barrier in the NHL

The injuries keep stacking up for the Avalanche, Paul Stastny is out for at least two week after having his appendix out :brickwall:

but the Avs are within 2 points of the division lead and if the playoffs started today, 4 of the 8 teams in the West would be from the Northwest division
